The film was produced in 1993. From one side, it shows the political history of China from 1924 up to 1977. But the main line focuses on the friendship between two main characters Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou, two actors of the Peking Opera and love affairs between Duan Xiaolou and Juxian, the courtesan. The movie can be described as drama or even melodrama because of the main storyline though it includes lots of cruel scenes. The title of the film Farewell, My Concubine refers to the novel by Lilian Lee and the play made on the basis of it. The author also took part in the screenwriting. The play tells the story of love relations between the King and concubine Consort Yu. This play, staged by main characters of the film, gives the audience and insight into the true nature of their relations because latent homosexuality is one of themes of the film. Besides, such topic as devotion is presented in the movies. Both Cheng Dieyi and Juxian are devoted to Duan Xiaolou and actors are devoted to the stage. As the movie deals with actors’ destinies make-up and costumes plays an important role in the film. The make-up crew as well as costume designer Chen Changmin managed to make film emotional and bright. Another factor which made this film worth seeing is a sound. The music was written by well-known Chinese composer Jiping Zhao. Film editor Xiaonan Pei created an additional value for the film using sepia and reversing chronology in the course of the movie. All in all, 14 different awards, including Golden Globe and Palme d’Or prove the brilliant quality of the movie as well as its actuality and importance.
