The rhetoric appeals (Logos, Ethos and Pathos) are commonly used because of their ability to appeal to targeted audience. Mark Grief in his work (The Reality of Reality Television) employs the Aristotle rhetoric to convince his audience on what he believed to be the reality behind the real television. The author gives an account of television history while ensuring a critical concern on the audience as the matter of address is something that the writer himself confirms to have discovered the unexpected truth later. This then forces him to present ideas based on the Aristotle rhetoric appeals.
The introduction of the article appeals to emotions as it starts with a provocative presentation of television as he makes a brief history of the television while mentioning on what the television audience expected. Grief introduces television history to have embarked him and the society as an utopia. “The Utopia of television nearly came to reach in 1992” Grief appeals to readers emotions by implying that the audience and he had the same expectations on television (Ousborne 294). With this aspect in the minds of the audience, Grief manages to move along with audience in one shoe until his final feeling about the effects of television. His emotional appeals include the mentioning of advertisements that kept on popping out of the televisions as small pleasures. Grief continues his appeal to emotions of his audience by presenting the whole history of a television which came with hopes to be a fantasy and a mixture of illusion that only served to move people along with its advances. He also refers television to be a box and yet at first a television which was presented as a hope and fantastic gadget. The reference of television as a box creates a negative emotional attitude to the mind of the reader as he or she will develop a no basis connotation of television to a mere box.
The most common way of addressing a pathetic idea by use of pathos rhetoric is through narration especially when the idea presented idea us turned to be present and palpable from the abstraction of logic. The values, perception and the beliefs of the writer will then conveyed to the audience imaginatively through implication. Grief employs this in his presentation as he gives the history and the effect of television from a personal narration perspective with an implication that what he felt about television is general and thus applies to all.
The article appeals for pity to the audience for championing for television as something of importance that will bring no disadvantage. To reinforce this idea the writer tells more about the reality that trends in the cities of states brought about by television viewership (Ousborne 300). Ethos is how the speaker or the writer uses his or her character to convince the listeners, viewers and readers towards a certain subject, issue or idea. It reveals the speakers or writers character, truth and trustworthiness. The number of television viewers and subscribers would increase if the presenters are truthful in what they present and also their credibility. One of the viewers ascertains that if the presenters or broadcasters are trustworthy in what they present and their work is credible they would flock into the vacuum in millions and they would then manifest their into the nature on 401 and 499 channels. For any production work to be liked by viewers, listeners and readers, the presenter should bring such presentation in a truthful and credible manner, viewers and listeners would like the programme depending on the way the presenter is presenting the work and in a credible manner and the way it reflects the reality from its original content without change of the content. This will make the readers, listeners and viewers to like the presentation as it contain the truth of what was expected. Listeners and viewers get to know the reality of the presentation through the presenter’s voice (Ousborne 302). Whenever presenting your judgments present them in the most appropriate manner without changing their content and the viewers will be interested in the judgments and would listen to the programme to the end and thus the idea would have been passed onto the listeners as depicted by the reality television. In most cases nowadays most judgments lack reality and thus the truth is not presented which leads to poor decision making and thus wrong judgments. Reality presentation is important in judgment making.
