This article will look at the innovation in the area of surgery. Surgery is a practice that started many years ago. This can be associated with the brain surgery during Roman empire and Egyptian activities in 3,000 B.C. since this time there has been innovation and improvement in the medical field of surgery. The researchers came up with different methods to solve the medical surgery procedure without many risks. The introduction of robotic technology in operating room presents huge success in the manner in which surgery is carried out. The success is both from a technological point of view and clinical aspect. Development and approval of surgical robots is a huge commercial opportunity that entrepreneurs have capitalized.
Effect of entrepreneurship on nursing
Because of the ever increasing demand in healthcare consumer services in the world, many opportunities have been avail for medical technology, information communication, insurance and service entrepreneurs. This opportunity has resulted into innovation in order for the entrepreneurs to meet the demand of the health care services. Insurance companies are coming up with different products to meet the financial need and security to different clients across the world. Information technology is an area that has received much attention when it comes to healthcare devices and software. They are devices that help in the quick diagnosis and precise prescription on medical treatment. Through IT entrepreneurs, there has been a lot of changes in the way healthcare staff work. Surgeons can now do an operation remotely while they are not in the same location with the patient. This means that a surgeon can be at his/her house and conduct an operation in the operation room. IT entrepreneurs have come up with devices such as Tablets, laptops, smart phones and desktop computers with healthcare software application to help medical activities.
Through entrepreneurship there are new systems in place that are able to help in quick decision making, improve the primary care and in the long run reduce the cost of health care. Competition and a lot of alternative medical technology has resulted into lower prices. It is now possible for consumers to have information through computing devices on medical conditions. Example of such applications and organizations are the WebMD, Revolution Hleath and eHealthInsurance. They give consumers information such as drugs, type of insurance available, hospital details and doctor information.
Effect of Robotic surgical system on staff
Surgeons need not to be present in the operating room. In fact surgeons can work from a remotely and carry out an operation. This depends on the connectivity speed of the internet. The robotic surgical system is very complex and has different functional units. The system is mainly made up of two main modules; the robot or slave module and the master also referred to as surgeon console. This is most important parts of the system. The master module has input devices where the surgeon inputs commands that are executed by the slave. The slave is the one that has three robotic arms that interact with the patient. The main reason why robotic surgery is being accepted by many is that it offers a technique for minimally invasive surgical techniques. The 3 D image data is also another factor why this method is being adopted by the healthcare. Robotic systems through many research and innovation have attained a stability level where they can be rated as stable. They are also able to work on small scale hence are more suitable.
Positive and negative impacts to healthcare
There are many benefits that are associated with robotic surgery; the first benefit is as a result of invasive surgery when compared to open approaches. They can offer solutions to patients who could not be well attended to when traditional methods such as laparoscopic were used. The use of robotic system shows precise operations because the system is stable and the ability to view surgical field in three D. Robotics surgical systems easily gain knowledge from previous operating because they have short learning curve compared to laparoscopic surgery.
There are many challenges associated with robotic surgical system. The first one is they are costly system. This is both in terms of initial cost and annual running cost. It costs between $2.5 to 3 million to acquire this system with approximately 10% running cost of the initial cost. This systems are also huge and consumer a lot of space. Installing of the two consoles takes up much space. This compared to surgeons, large space is required. Flexibility and breakdown are other technical issues that robotic surgical systems face.
