Sexism can be defined as the hatred or discrimination against people from their gender rather than their particular merits. This has always been shown a modern day event which is common. For instance, as a result of sex, a lady cannot participate or take part in a hockey league. Correspondingly, those of male gender cannot be part of the cheerleading squads due to their sexual condition. However, many movements and groups that creates awareness to the public to help in bringing to light this issue exists, sexism will still remain a problem to the world as it always has since the creation of mankind (Mills, 35).
In its common usage, it has always been directed against females as indicated in a poll that was taken from a university in the US that showed 66% of the student’s fraternity had a belief that the males were the gender of superiority. Perhaps the origin of this kind of bias thinking is derived from the customs of age. In the ancient Greece, dating back to two thousand five hundred years, females were born as their father’s property (Guillaumin, 20). This ownership mentality shifted to their spouses as they became adults. Women were as well rendered not worth of the accompaniment of male. In fact, in the past or older days, husbands were to be brought dowries by the women. These dowries included; gold, livestock or even valuables which were used as payment for marriage. This is a clear example of the number of discriminatory laws and teachings would have been fixed from the cultural and ancient times.
Even though some societies have made changes in their viewpoints in relating to the rights of females, others are still heavily centered on older beliefs which are both political and religious. Even in the present time in North America, there are uncountable cases of misogyny or sexism. As much sexism is always viewed as opposing the females, it is not only the type of sexism. Sexism towards the female gender in its extreme form is known as misogyny. It exists in many forms, and its worst form is that a misogynist will hate all women openly because they are female (Nylund, 195). Other religions or cultures are too misogynists since they demand another set of expectations from women. In places where the Islamic religion is widespread as in the Middle East, the requirement is that women should be almost entirely covered in a given black clothing.
The hatred of males which is described as misandry also exists in the society today while in the past, misogyny was much rooted, and misandry is viewed as a more current issue. In accordance with the leading researchers view, it is used by the so-called feminists to create the world that is more ideological (Nylund, 195). They have a mentality the feminists blaming males for the oppressions of misogyny should face the law in a collective manner for criminal acts against women throughout history.
Lastly, Bill Rodgers was the very first man to cross the finishing line in the N. York marathon. Sixteen minutes later, the race would be finished by the first woman. Interestingly, the last male gender to cross would come at an outstanding five hours later. Many individuals would argue that men are stronger and even better athletes. However, in accordance with the race, the difference between man and woman was very little as compared to the last man and the first man (Campbell, 77). This evidently shows that, gender unfairness is absolutely non ethical and evidently incorrect.
