The article talks about racism that was shown in YouTube (Cross, 2013). Racism has been a great concern in the United States in the recent years. An increase in racial abuse targeted to individuals on social media was associated with black people affected the most. They are not afraid of the law on their racial stands. The article talks about Francesca Ramsey, who has a YouTube channel where she posts her videos for people to watch. She has stated that only one of her nearly 200 videos is on race. When she hosted a meet up with the fans only 3 of about 150 people were white.
The one video on race is named "Shit White Girls Sayto Black Girls." This video has 10 million views of around 18 million views from all of her videos. The video contained racist content but was the video that received a lot of views more than any other video she has made. Her other videos mostly focus on American culture and other small factors that she and the rest of the world are experiencing. Therefore, it can be seen as an outrage that people would rather stay in social media so that they can watch racial contents. The comments are also another concern when it comes to comments on her videos. They always seem to be racial in the manner that they were held and the people who say them. Some of them would target them no matter how good the piece that she has made is. They will only focus to bring her down racially from posting her videos with racial abuses that she says she is used to.
She states that she has a difficult time with the YouTube comments on her videos more than in any other social media. That was because it has been made easy to hate or spread racism through YouTube more than in any other platform. YouTube management however says that they have features that the users could flag comments as inappropriate as the same as remove racist comments. That seemed not to change the situation as the damage was already done before the users can take the steps that YouTube has put in place. The people will get away with it and keep their comments on other channels giving racial abuse especially to black people.
Posting nasty racial comments to the minority who in this case are black people is not the right way to go about things (Castells, 2013). Some people might not be able to take down some of the comments and end up committing suicide and other fatal outcomes. If people do not like videos on YouTube, they can just ignore watching them or express their comments in a manner that will auger well with the blogger. That would indicate maturity in the person commenting towards the blogger. She states that she would focus on people who have positive comments and leave out people that choose to hate her work because she is of color (Nakamura & Chow-White, 2013).
The reporting is by one of the group's representatives. She shows her views from what she has experienced on her YouTube channel and how it affects her. It has been on her experience and not that of the larger group. The comments that she receives on her YouTube channel are always targeted to her alone and not the whole group. She however feels that the rest of the group always receives the same treatment as she does when she posts her videos. Therefore representing her group from her personal experience might help in improving the situation in YouTube rather than making it more difficult than it is already. Her opinion was held by such people who post racist comments on the videos to stop the behavior. She has also begun posting the ‘nasty' comments that she gets showing that she is already used to the situation and accepted it.Conclusion
The article talks about racism that was shown in YouTube. Racism has been a great concern in the United States in the recent years. The comments are a big concern when it comes to her videos. They always seem to be racial in the manner that they were expressed and the people who say them. Some of them would target them no matter how good the piece that she has made is. They will only focus to bring her down racially from posting her videos with racial abuses that she says she is used to. Racism is one of the bad norms that are being fought in the world today, and that were felt in the social networks. People were regulated on what they say and how they say it to others. Law should take its course that followed.
