As far as unions are concerned, I have not been a part of a labor union. I have worked in corporate most of my professional career. I do have an aunt who is a nurse and she has told me a little bit about unionization. A year or two they went on strike due to pay cuts and were successful in keeping their salaries because of it. I think that labor unions can be great because the union rep can be the voice of the employee and facilitate a positive working relationship with the employee and their employer.

Hi Stephanie, I appreciate the chance of getting to know you better in terms of your educational experiences, leisure activities, and background. Your achievements in the field of human resource are outstanding. One essential element I managed to extract from your response was the advantage of labor unions. You say that the unions voice the needs of their members and advocate for fairness in the corporate world. They provide a linkage between the employer and workers that assists them to understand each other and come up with solutions for various business issues such as the one experienced by your aunt concerning pay cuts.
Jennifer Holmes
Hello professor and class!
My name is Jennifer Holmes. I grew up here in Miami. I am an academic advisor for the medical programs at Miami Dade College. I started working at the college right after High School, as a student assistant. From there, I worked as a transcript evaluation secretary while completing my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at St. Thomas University. I really enjoyed working at the College; As a result, I remained working in higher education after I earned my bachelor’s degree. I later transitioned to the academic advisement and student services department.
In my spare time, I volunteer at “His House”, a faith-based, private home for foster kids. At “His House”, I am the Crowd Breaker team leader and one of the mentors. It is so much fun as I am a big kid myself. When I am not in school, at work or with my kids (foster mentees), I enjoy Zumba classes, cooking and traveling. The start of a new semester always excites me as I feel a little bit closer to the finish line. With my MBA, I am hoping to teach in the business program at Miami Dade College (or any post-secondary institution). In addition, this degree will also open many other doors for me and break any possible glass ceiling.
As far as the Union aspect, I am not familiar with the benefits or disadvantages. However, I did a bit of research which revealed that Unions are not always favorable to the employers. According to the Huffington Post, the employers may face some challenges when dealing with unions, as their sole priority is to protect the interest of the employeesmany times, at whatever cost to the employers. Furthermore, union representatives can sometimes make unreasonable demands from the employers without understanding business trends, or evaluating business viability (Masterfano, 2013)
I look forward to working with you all, I wish everyone a great semester!
-Jennifer

Hi Jennifer, it was nice to learn more about you. Your take on labor unions provides their disadvantages and advantages. Based on your research, the trade unions can be harmful towards the interests of the bosses since they are solely focused on the needs of the employees without considering trends in the corporate environment. The aspect makes the labor unions unpopular amongst the employers. However, the organizations have assisted laborers to obtain necessary conditions such as regulated working hours, benefits, and pay rises. An indication that they are two sides to the trade unions that the employers and employees should strive to maintain a balance.
Hello Class
I have been working at Miami Dade College for the past 19 year, in the Student Services division (Admissions/Registration, FA) sometimes it can be overwhelming, especially during peak registration, yet I find countless rewards and satisfaction in serving students. I always find that regardless of what my day might requires, the greatest pleasure in my position is supporting the engagement, education, and accomplishments of our students. I have an MBA/Management from NSU and this is my last class towards a certificate in HR Management. Besides working and taking classes, I’m very involved in church activities. I’m looking forward to an exciting semester!!
The only experience I have had with Unions is through full time at Miami Dade College These faculty members get access to various benefits as the Union negotiates with MDC on behalf of the faculty. Staff and administrators are not part of a union. It is my understanding that Unions are potentially powerful forces in the organization (Armstrong, 2011). Administrators have annual contracts and the rest of the staff do annual evaluations. The Union and the employees have a mutual interest in the organization as they both seek better pay as well as better working conditions.

Hi Michelle, it is nice to find someone who agrees with my perspective concerning the job. You understand the stressors and the benefits I derive from the duties. I have to agree that the best moments in my career are seeing my students excel in life as well. The slogan of the company ignites the spark amongst the personnel to place the requirements of the learners before theirs to ensure that assist them in every possible manner. Thank you for your well wishes, and I also pray that you will also be successful as you pursue the new career path that is ahead of you.
Hi,
I also worked for Miami Dade College however my tenure at the College is about to end and will be transitioning to another career path. Peak Registration can be a bit overwhelming. I believe it has become better over the years with the new implementations that have been inputted. MDC serves a large body of students where our mantra is student comes first. Being able to assist students and engage with them is very rewarding because we play a major role in their lives to further their education. I wish you the best of luck in all future endeavors.
