Supply Chain of Big Mac
We all might wonder someday that where does our Big Mac actually comes from? McDonald’s has an enormous supply chain, which fills the needs of more than 69 million customers every day by serving them in over 36,000 restaurants situated in 100 countries. On an average, McDonald’s produces 75 hamburgers every second. This reflects that its supply chain is super-efficient. From farm to our serving plates, the supply chain of Big Mac involves a number of processes, which can be illustrated as follows;
Production Processing Distribution Consumption Disposal
The procurement of ingredients used in the production of Big Mac are outsourced to ‘McDonalds’ Direct suppliers that attain ingredients and material from numerous Indirect Suppliers (Schroeder et. al, 2013).
The Supply Chain of McDonalds comprises of five 5 main functions/supply chain members. This is the standard supply chain members present in Big Mac’s chain in every country and at every location; however, the sub-member or supply chain components tends to vary. For instance, considering the example of McDonalds in India, it is present in more than 52 cities and have over 300 outlets. McDonald’s supply chain in India looks like this (Schroeder et.al, 2013).
Processors/Grower Processing Inbound Transportation Distribution Centre Outbound Transportation McD Restaurant
This supply chain also reflects the direct and indirect suppliers. Some grower and processors are direct whereas some are the indirect suppliers of ingredient to McDonalds. However, processors like Vista, Amrit Food & Dynamics are the endorsed business suppliers of McDonalds (Christopher, 2016).
Supply Chain of Gasoline
As fuel industry of every country plays a significant role in its economic development; therefore, performance and efficiency of its supply chain have also increasingly become a matter of importance. The gasoline industry involves several steps in its supply chain that can be indicated as follows;
Exploration Production Refining Marketing Distribution Consumption
In this supply chain of gasoline, exploration involves the geological, geo-physical and seismic operation that are undertaken for probing and extracting reserves. The production involves engineering related to drilling, shifting to reservoir,s and production of crude oil. This crude oil is then sent to refineries for being refined and converted into different petroleum products. This involves complex operations. The marketing involves the retail and sale of gasoline, and its products to direct, as well as, indirect buyers and consumer. Refined products are then distributed to the fuel station from where we can buy it at the prescribed prices.
Supply Chain of Automobile Repair
An automobile repair is a complex chain, which involves numerous players. We as a customer never focus on expanding the back tail of the parts and services that we receive when we take our vehicle for repair. Whereas, understating this supply chain in the reverse direction is easy since it is a based on pull chain phenomenon. For instance, we as a customer take our car or other vehicle to the mechanic or service center that charge us his service amount and repair our car as per the needs. However, in order to meet demand of numerous customers like us, service center or retailer is required to maintain a sufficient inventory of spare parts that are supplied by ‘Spare Distributors'. The authorized and genuine spare parts are mostly provided by vehicle manufacturers. Apparently, vehicle manufacturers has their distinctive supply chain, which also involve a number of supply chain members. Whereas, raw material suppliers and component suppliers play the most significant role at the back of vehicle manufacturers (Christopher, 2016).
