Introduction
Technology is widely used in almost all aspects of life to promote social and economic development. In businesses, homes, schools, and almost everywhere, Information Technology is used for communication. With this technology, it is quicker to get information than in historical period where information took days to reach a receiver. Technology devices are becoming cheaper to purchase due to vendors competition and also people are moving with technology changes where they learn any new device. Despite Technology’s importance in communication, it has some challenges. This essay will look at why technology has made communication easier and its limitations to personal contacts.
Technology is the tool used to make human work easier. In telecommunication and computing, is a tool used in creation, conversion, storage, management, control, display, and broadcasting of information.
“Examples of ICT are electronic content, telecommunications products, computers and ancillary equipment, software, information kiosks and transaction machines, videos, IT services, and multifunction office machines which copy, scan, and fax documents”
. It is stated that,
“In a society, living standards, patterns of work and leisure, the education system, and marketplace are all influenced by advances in information and knowledge”.
These technologies include electronic mails, mobile phones, Internet, and computer systems. Technology is being used every where to enhance communication with people within and in remote areas. Technology is widely used in almost all aspects of life to promote social and economic development.
In the study of stated that “the time of slow business communication and the use of snail mail in the work environment which has enhance importance of prompt business communication at work place has become profound”. Information is travelling fast due to technology of electronic mail, Internet, and smart phones where an employee can work outside company’s compound. People get instant messages from their smart phones. Also, the cost of sending and getting information has reduced. Use of technology of electronic mail has made communication cheaper since the cost of Internet is low and systems for communication are available at affordable cost. It has also made communication quicker where information is transmitted very fast from sender to receiver. In addition, communication is made easier to involve people doing a given activity in brainstorming, collecting views, getting feedbacks, and sharing of common information instant.
Besides its importance, it has limitations of personal contact. Since technology has brought people of different ages together, a sender can send a message and be interpreted differently by receiver. Through interaction, especially in emails, and social media, personal information can be accessed and be used for personal preferences. Also, communication that does not enable face-to-face communication has a challenge of the receiver not getting facial impression of sender, especially when the information is emotional. English is the language that is mostly used in Technologies when there are several languages in the world and several people being not able to understand English is a challenge to Technology. Although, Technology enhances quick feedback during brainstorming, it is a challenge to have a discussion and listening to ones views which are more detailed than when discussed online.
Conclusion
Since the emerging of technology, quality of communication has improved and it is continuing to advance daily. Technology is mostly used in communication, where advanced systems are developed to make communication easier. The technology has come with challenges of personal contact during communication.
