Assessment2–Marginalized Groups and Policing Practice
Tutorial Day and Time:
Marginalized groups refer to those whose significance in the society is lessened. Their desires and needs are ignored, with most of them being excluded from the society. This makes them suffer from discrimination. In an organizational setting, if an employer decides to treat all the workers equally except for one marginalized group such as women, religious group, handicapped, racial minorities, then this is referred to as indirect discrimination. However, indirect discrimination can only be unlawful if it is not justified.
Policing practice on the other hand, involves cooperation between the police and the community with the aim of improving the value of life. It encompasses various practical and philosophical approaches which keep on evolving. Strategies used in policing vary in accordance to responses and needs of a particular group. In community policing, police officers do not act as sole protectors of law and order. Instead, the whole community is involved in activities that improve quality and safety of neighborhoods. The reinvigorating of communities is made essential to prevent crimes and enhance vital neighborhoods .
Some of the structural factors affecting the marginalized groups include poverty, gang violence and domestic violence.
Community policing is designed to be a long-term obligation and not just a quick fix. It takes time, patience, planning, and flexibility to attain the required affiliations with the community to eradicate the significant causes of crime . Community policing should also be closely monitored by community and political leaders to make it effective. Success of policing should also be emphasized by the whole police organization to ensure all parties involved, that is, local government, private agencies, public, and members of the community combine to achieve the same.
In conclusion poverty, domestic violence, and gang violence are some of the structural factors that affect marginalized groups. Poverty has led to low life expectancy, high infant deaths, and poor health due to unaffordable medical services among the marginalized groups. The poor sanitation and living standards also lead to significant health risks among these groups. Domestic violence on the other hand is a major threat to families. As much as it does not bias on any gender, women are the most affected with most of them suffering from severe injuries. Children are also victims of this domestic violence. Most of them do what they see, affecting their relations with other peers as well as their own behaviors. Gang violence is mostly due to peer pressure. It occurs in situations whereby youths who view themselves as insignificant to the society embark on gangs to earn recognition. Most of them only want their presence to be felt within and outside the society. The formation of gangs to harass, kill and even rape innocent people is seen as their platform to gain attention from the society.
