Psychologists and psychiatrists have devised several ways to study human personality. In the Five Factor Personality Test, researchers allow the respondent to fill in a survey and then analyze their score on the basis of five broad categories. However, these are not only used by professionals but any individual can analyze his/her scores given the basic understanding. The five factors of personality that are analyzed include; openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These five factors form the basis but there are other personality traits or characteristics that come under these broad terms. Every trait is independent of the other; hence, there is no repetition during the analysis stage. Critics suggest that this model is unable to account for all human traits; however, proponents hold the view that it incorporates a wide number of characteristics that largely determine the individual’s personality.
Openness: I received a score of 25 which is considered average according to the sample from which my score was compared. According to this result, I lie somewhere in the middle which suggests that I have a combined interest in art and nature, but I do not ignore practicality. The score also suggests that I may be willing to learn new things but if I find them to be unrealistic I would not give much attention to those things. I would agree with this assessment of my personality as I am open towards new concepts and ideas. As I am always willing to experience new cultures, traditions, and foods I may consider myself as having an element of openness in my personality.
Conscientiousness: My score on this trait is 38 that is considered on the higher side. This indicates that my personality is focused towards goal attainment. Once I have made up my mind to do something I would ensure it is done on time. External environmental distractions are of little concern to my tactics of achieving my goals according to this personality trait. This score is realistically applicable to my true personality. As a mother of two young children and a student alongside I have to ensure I plan out my activities. I am able to prioritize my work according to the requirements. Moreover, I am working hard to ensure my admission in the Physical Therapy Program during the summers. These traits in my personality are truly reflective of the conscientious behavior which I possess.
Extraversion: I have scored high in extraversion. My score on this trait was 34 which are considered to be relatively higher as compared to the sample populations who have taken this test. This score indicates how I would be in social situations and while interacting with other individuals. As a high scorer, my personality should depict confidence and my ability to communicate effectively with other people. This trait has been my strong point ever since high school. I have always been able to gel in with my surroundings; hence, the score of 34 is a true reflection upon my personality. As I was awarded Miss Congeniality during high school it would indicate my ability to be a friendly person who is able to adapt to her surroundings effectively.
Agreeableness: My score of 33 on this trait is considered to be relatively high. This trait depicts the person’s ability to make friends and cooperate in group settings. I am a very easy person to get along with as I am willing to cooperate and give in to my demands in order to ensure unanimity. I have a lot of friends because I tend to listen to everyone’s opinion rather than showing aggressions towards conflicting views. As a mother of young children, I have had to compromise in life in many instances; therefore, agreeableness now comes naturally in my personality. Furthermore, I do not hesitate in making new friends and I am always willing to meet new people and know them.
Neuroticism: My score of 15 is relatively lower in this trait. This indicates the individual’s ability to handle stressful situations without being let down by the stress causing factors. I agree with this score as I do not let myself feel bad about anything that may be causing stress or tension in my life. I have the ability to handle stress through different ways and stress releasing activities. Being a mother does not allow me to feel under stress as I have a lot of work to do throughout the day. Therefore, I am able to practice stress avoidance by keeping myself busy with studies and children.
The aforementioned variables truly depict various aspects of my personality. I am a friendly, outgoing, and cooperative person, which I feel is important to the profession that I would like to join after my studies. Being a Health Science major student and a potential applicant of the Physical Therapy Program I consider myself as a valuable asset to any hospital or health clinic given my personality scores. I would be able to handle patients in a friendly manner and help achieve my organizations long term goals by working hard and consistently towards them.
