On February 4, 2016, I got a chance to attend the concert at the Recital Hall of Laidlaw Performing Arts Centre. The instruments included piano and flute. This was a Flute Recital. Each piece was performed by a different musician. At 7.30 p.m. the audience indulged itself in the world of a wonderful music.
The first composition that was performed was the “Summerland”, composed by William Grant Still, also known as “The Dean of African-American Composers”. This charming melody is very light and truly reveals the summer as everyone imagines it: the warm breeze, the sunshine. It was clear that the composer tried to express the nature and let the audience enjoy the reminder of the emotions we all experience in summer. Andra Bohnet coped wonderfully with the task while performing this piece.
The next composition featured Natalie Talley, who played “Orientale” by the French composer Philippe Gaubert, who is especially renown for writing music for flute. This piece of music seemed to be rather difficult to perform, as it contained many complex passages. However, it was performed professionally.
“Orientale” was followed by the “Wind Song” by Dean C. Howard, written in 1980. The piece was performed by Heather Trinh. Although the melody is very light, this piece is a bit more moderate and sentimental in comparison with the previous ones, and also technically difficult.
Later on Emily Denison played the “Native American Suite” by Gary Schocker, which was followed by Alicia Daniels performing the traditional Irish music written by Brian Finnegan and Mike McGoldrick. These tunes reveal a very jolly spirit and practically breathe joy, happiness and energy, which is a general feature of the Irish music. “Farewell to Whalley Range” by Mike McGoldrick also possesses very playful melody, and is very quick. Finally, the last melodies performed were “Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise, op. 26” by Albert Franz Doppler, who did not only compose, but was also a great flute virtuoso. The melody is rather tragic, but it is majestic and absolutely breathtaking.
The final note was the composition “Rainy day” by Juan Pablo Rosales. This piece brought the audience back to the light and cheerful mood.
All in all, I loved the recital. The musicians were brilliant, and, although the music pieces were not easy with regard to the technique, they coped with the task and made the audience truly feel the music and enjoy the melody. It is also interesting that the abovementioned music can also performed only by piano, without featuring the flute, but it was primarily composed for a flute. While some of the pieces were difficult due to the complex transitions and passages, the other ones, especially the last melodies, were probably hard to play since the tempo was very fast. I enjoyed the recital, and the way how the melodies were combined. Some of them were light and happy, some were more sentimental and slow. However, this mix created a magic atmosphere.
