The book “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins takes place in a dystopian fantasy world. This genre is adventure fantasy. While reading one quickly realizes that things are not as we now know them. There is a great gap between the poor and the rich. The rich take advantage of the poor by using their children for entertainment is a televised event called “The Hunger Games”. Children are thrown into a generated environment and forced to fight to the death. The brutality of this treatment eventually leads to need to change the current political system.
The setting of this book takes place in the future in a dystopian environment. Dystopian refers to a time period in a negative light taking place after an apocalyptic event. There is almost two different worlds within the book, the primitive way of life that the poor have and the technologically advanced world that the upper class have. The main character, Katniss is from one of these poor areas. The area is described as having run down shacks, wooded, and with little technology. The district Katniss lived in was known for its coal mines. They often had drought, storms, and war. The capital, in contrast, is one of skyscrapers and impressive technology. Everything is divided into different districts that are known for their local production and economic status.
There are several characters throughout the book that hold important roles, but the three that form the basis for the story are Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. Katniss, the heroine, is from a very poor family that rely on her entirely. Katniss, as a character, is brave, compassionate, and strong. As the main provider for her family, her need to survive causes her relationships to suffer. She takes on the responsibility caring for her younger sister and her own mother who is unable to do so. She has also taken on the role as a hunter to provide food for her family (Collins).Gale represents Katniss’ past. As her hunting buddy and companion, Gale is also poor and experiences many of the same circumstances as Katniss. Peeta represents Katniss’ future. Peta teams up with Katniss throughout the book and helps her through the difficult situation. The tribute certainly effect how relationships were formed throughout the book. The tribute took Katniss away from the stability she felt in her relationship with Gale and placed her with Peeta, with whom she could never tell what was real and what was an act for the audiences viewing the Hunger Games. Befriending Peeta was likely essential for Katniss’ survival Even though there are many interesting characters throughout the book, my favorite was Katniss. I really admired how she sacrificed so much for her own family. By becoming tribute she saved her sister from certain death. The hopes of the entire district relied upon her success. Her bravery and strength are inspiring to me.
After the tribute Peeta’s character changes. At first he seems to surrender to his fate, death. He knows his weakness and doesn’t see any alternative (Collins ). He doesn’t have the skills need to survive the Hunger Games but he relies on his cleverness and ability to form relationships to survive. When Peeta and Katniss team up it is obvious they complement each other well. I would consider this point the climax of the book, together they hatch a plan to break the rules of the hunger games. . The turning point for Peeta is when he says, “I keep wishing I could think of a way . . . to show the capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than a piece in their games.” (Collins ). Their coming together, showed the need to survive is sometimes not as strong as a friendship. At the end of the book, they are faced with killing one another at the end of the games, they defy the Capital by threatening to take their own life with the poisonous berries. They take the pretend love affair constructed by the Capital and turn it to their own benefit. This puts the Capital in a precarious situation; they cannot anger the viewing audience by insisting on their death. Katniss is also realizing the importance of Peeta when she states, “And while I was talking, the idea of actually losing Peeta hit me again and I realized how much I don't want him to die. And it's not about the sponsors. And it's not about what will happen when we get home. And it's not just that I don't want to be alone. It's him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread.” (Collins) This also resolves their problem, both are allowed to live due to popular demand of the audience.
As a fourteen year old teenager, I could really relate to the plight of someone close to my age. Even though they were from another time, I was able to relate to the characters. I would recommend this book to others as it has a lot of action yet presents an even deeper reflection on society. The strength and will power of the characters is something to aspire to. The book is entertaining and fast paced and although fiction has plenty of things that inspire thought and emotion that makes it believable. The book is fairly clear, the title explain the premise well. I feel Katniss is a good role model for someone my age, and meant for the teenager age group. I loved how the book ended and would not change it if I had a choice. I thought the sacrifice of Katniss and Peeta eating the poison berries was very smart and also very brave. This was my favorite part. After reading the book, I really would like to read the other books by this author. There are two more sequels to this book that I hope to read. Overall, I thought that “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins was an excellent book that most any teenager would enjoy reading.
