- In order to be able to answer the quiz questions one should know that the speaker should employ attention grabbers (attention materials) in the introduction of the speech as a tactic of gaining the listeners attention. Some of the attention materials include the storytelling (factual or hypothetical illustrations), asking questions (rhetorical or overt-response), provocative statements, quotations, arousing curiosity, using demonstrations, and using incentives to listen (Gregory 220-223). A poor introduction fails to capture the interest and attention of the audience while a poor conclusion would reduce the effectiveness of a good speech (Gregory 218).
After garnering the attention of the listeners, the speaker should orient the listeners with the message that is to be passed to them as the second part of the introduction (Gregory 223). In this case, orienting materials are used (Gregory 223). Orienting materials include; offering background information, establishing credibility, and giving a preview of the body of the speech (Gregory 223). Lastly, when concluding a speech, the speaker needs to; signal that the speech is ending, to summarize the main points of the speech, and to stress on the main point using a clincher (Gregory 227).
- After reading chapter 11, I have learnt the importance of a good introduction, which should have the attention gabbing and the orienting parts respectively. In addition, I have gained knowledge on the various strategies that are used to make introductions and conclusions effective. I had taken introductions and conclusions for granted in the past, but now I am informed on their importance and how to make the effective.
- The chapter is quite clear and the illustrations have helped a lot in explaining the various points. I do not have questions.
