Example Of The Minimum Wage For Teenagers Admission Essay

As a transfer applicant to The University of Texas at Austin, I am a freshman, who is currently applying for a sophomore transfer. Apart from my studies and student life at the college, I am fond of math and everything that has to do with with numbers and calculations and, at this level, am aware that I want to relate my profession exclusively to accounting. I wish to share my experience related to the issue of importance, i.e., the minimum wage for teenagers. According to the Bureau of Statistics, 16- to 19-year-old teenager employment, has fallen in the country, but the minimum wage increase a few years ago and now is a very important factor. We all know that teenagers usually accept those minimum-wage jobs, and that group is especially affected by the minimum-wage legislation. The benefit, however, is that the minimum-wage law permits all employers to pay above the minimum, although, it is not always the case. Notably that President Obama was among the politicians who addressed the importance of raising the minimum wage to $9.00 per hour, by stating “no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty.”
Having moved from Pakistan to the US, my family was suffering financially and emotionally, therefore, securing a stable environment and finding permanent jobs was very crucial for us, if we did not want to live below the poverty line. Now my parents have obtained regularly paid jobs, and we are living in a middle-class household, and I am not my family’s sole breadwinner. On the other hand, it is very overwhelming to live still with my parents, although I am less financially independent from them. Most of my teenage friends at the college have a similar situation – they are enrolled in school and are working part-time. Many have found jobs in restaurants, but they are earning less than the minimum federal wage.
Being skilled, and knowledge thirsty helped me find my first part-time job in June 2013, at Hollister, Co. that has become of supreme importance to me. To earn my minimum wage at the company, I was in charge of the cash register, the store maintenance and organization, and I was also doing other miscellaneous tasks to ensure outstanding customer service. Right there, I acquired the essential skills and improved my personal traits, such as tolerance, precision, and meeting deadlines. In January 2014, I began working as a Certified Volunteer Tax Preparer at Neighborhood Tax Center in Houston, TX, and was responsible for preparing tax returns, providing legal service, and maintaining the confidentiality of clients. My experience shows that the college students like me, who working part-time, would benefit directly from a higher minimum wage. Often, as a fact, full-time students are paid the sub-minimum wage, which is less than the minimum wage, and constitutes $4.25 per hour for those under 20 years of age during their first 90 calendar days of employment. On the other hand, increased minimum wage is only one prerequisite to reduce poverty.
My valuable experience at Hollister, Co. developed a great desire to learn the details and peculiarities of accounting and finance, and to pursue my studies in a BBA+MPA five year program. After finishing the program, I want to take the CPA exam to secure me a job of an auditor, or a tax preparer. I am convinced that I have the abilities and preliminary experience to become a skilled Accountant, besides, I am a motivated individual who is in pursuit of all the challenges that my profession offers.
