Rob Reiner directed ‘The Princess Bride’ is one of successful Americans movies. This movie is adventurous, comedy and romantic movie that is based on William Goldman written novel of the same name. The movie was released in the year 1987 and considered as a cult movie of the American cinema. This paper intends to discuss the movie and other related aspects of the area under discussion.
The movie begins with a scene where a book is being read by a grandfather (Peter Falk) to his sick grandson (Fred Savage). The grandfather reads the story of a young woman, Buttercup who is very beautiful. She loves a man, Westley and wants to marry him but Westley disappeared while fighting with a dreaded pirate. Buttercup waits for him for a number of years and then gets engaged to Humperdinck, assuming Westley dead (Elwes et al.).
Story moves ahead, the lost lover Westley reappears in the story and rescues buttercup who was going to commit suicide. The story passes through several phases, witnesses various adventurous scenes, comedy scenes, and ends with a happy ending. The story comes to an end when the grandfather leaves his grandson to sleep. The story of this movie is knitted in a very realistic and simple manner that touches the hearts and brains of the audiences.
The movie is like other fantasy movies of its times that caters storyline, portrayal of gentlemen, villains, and landscapes. Every aspect of this movie is very well designed. Rob Reiner is very skilled director and his direction has made this movie a cult classic (Maslin). There are a number of comedy, adventurous and romantic scenes that substantiate the nimbleness of the director. None of the scenes bore the audiences and keep their interest alive in this classic movie.
Humor, comedy, and action scenes are knitted in a way that makes this movie as a successful entertainer. Comedy and action scenes are significant part of this movie. Other aspects of the movie as costumes, makeup, camerawork, music, and dialogue delivery are very impressive. There are several dialogues and scenes in the movie that hint adult humor but they are not vulgar and simply pass in a healthier manner. ‘The Princess Bride’ is one nicely made movie that can be seen with the family.
The acting is very strong aspect of this movie. Every actor has performed and delivered his best. Rob Reiner was not only the director but also the co- produced this movie with Andrew Scheinman. Robin Wright as buttercup, Carry Elwes as Westley, Chris Sarandon as the prince Humperdinck, have performed in a vivid way in this movie. Other artists as Billy Crystal, peter cook, Carol Kane and Christopher Guest have done justice with their roles.
The movie lodged its presence at the box office as a good entertaining movie but at the same time it received wide acclamations from various parts of the nation (Metacritic). The movie was also appreciated by the critics and succeeds in receiving very favorable critic reviews. Critic reviews in various newspapers and also on the websites were in favor of this movie that suggested audiences to watch this healthy entertainer.
Having observed the abovementioned succinct analysis of the movie, ‘The Princess Bride’, it can be concluded that the movie is one of successful entertainers that caters a complete entertainment before the audiences. Every aspect of this movie including the comedy, acting, adventure, action, humor and story is very entertaining. Due to its excellence in every characteristic of movie making, this movie is considered as a cult classic movie of the American cinema.
