The state has a responsibility of serving its people. It carries out international trade for the country. International trade relations are determined through negotiations. The government has a duty to provide security for its people. Security is provided by the external and internal security forces. These include; the army and the administration police. Other provisions include those pertaining to health and environmental conservation. The leaders oversee the protection of citizens from natural disasters. This include; floods, fire, tsunami, and explosions. The government is made of elected people who have the mandate to serve the rest. Election of the people to the government should therefore be fair and democratic. Election criterion need to allow skilled and competent persons to form the government. Intelligent people should be elected to the government. Such persons will help develop the country economically, technologically, politically and ideologically. People in a country work and pay taxes used for development. The government oversees the development projects. Perhaps, peace building is the central role performed by the government.
A government is an institution in which public policies are created and enforced. It is a body operating in an organized manner with the duty to create and enforce laws without the approval of any other authority. Governments are created by the people. Citizens elect people during an election who represent them in the higher authority. Governments come up to establish justice, provide tranquility at domestic level, common defense, enhance common welfare and secure freedom to citizens. People come together and sign agreements between the ruled and the rulers. This is beneficial to the citizens of a country. Various forms of government exist. Some of these are; presidential and parliamentary government systems. In these systems, dictatorship, autocracy, democracy and many other forms of impunity may emerge.
A nation is made up of people referred to as citizens. It is a huge collection of citizens united by common beliefs, culture, language or history. These groups of people inhabit a specific territory. They form bonds of identity. The place where they leave has well known boundaries. Countries are demarcated to enhance service delivery. Disputes in a nation are tied to; religion, culture, tribalism and ethnicity. To maintain national homogeneity, migration passports are issued to people who travel to other nations. People who are loyal to their nation are called patriots. Citizens work together in a nation to strengthen their government and improve their livelihoods.
The government gets its power from citizens. In a general election, people choose leaders who form the government. The power of these people is rested in their offices. Every office has well documented duties for its successor. The people elected to join the government should be intelligent so that they can improve the economy of the nation and provide adequate security to its people. Citizens are bound to entrust the elected officials. The leaders have authority over all activities that are undertaken throughout the nation.
Power is a form of domination. Leaders are representatives of the people at the government level. Ironically, some leaders pursue eccentric missions. Such leaders are selfish. The central government makes laws which have to be adhered to by the county governments, industries, institutions and individuals. One cannot decide for the government. The government directs people on what to do and what to avoid. None of the citizens is above the law. This implies that everyone must respect the law. However, some of the laws may be oppressive. This is a strategy that bad leaders adopt to retain power. The domination of malice, impunity and oppression characterize bad governance. Some governments are democratic while others are autocratic. Autocratic leadership does not involve people in decision making. This is a system where leaders have absolute power. In a communist system, all the property within the borders of a nation belongs to the state. In a capitalist state, individuals have a right to own and manage property. Maintaining the status quo is possible when there is no unity among people. Examples of people with same ideas include; economists, scientists, socialists and technocrats.
Domination in power is maintained in several ways. The earlier governments used dictatorship to ensure that nobody questions the decisions made by the government. Opposition is cracked down. By so doing, passing an oppressive bill becomes easy. The army is manipulated to counter the activities of reformers. Foreign investment of public money is common. Contracts are assigned to foreign governments because of the power rested on the government. Governments subject its people to suffering to divert their attention. Corrupt leaders use money to mislead the people. The security forces are also used to shut the people.
The government controls all state activities. It comes up with laws to govern its people. The nation is made of people with a common language, religion and culture. The government performs major developments functions. The citizens pay taxes to drive development process. Therefore, a good government must serve its citizens at all capacities .This is what good governance entails.
