ISSUE: WHO IS TRACKING YOU?
After turning on location services on my IPhone, I found that it is tracking every move I make. I can see all my locations on the map during the day. Moreover, I can see the exact time when I visit each place on the map. According to my phone, I spend a lot of time at my university and home. Additionally, there are a couple of places marked on the map like a grocery store and cafés. However, I have been to only a few of them. Even though, the Apple is not using my information about locations without permission and this service was developed to personalize different services, such as predictive traffic routing, I feel uncomfortable knowing that somebody can track me.
Even though, “Do Not Track” and “Do Not Call” have very similar names, they are not similar at all. “Do Not Track” and “Do Not Call” have two main differences. First of all, advertising pays for a “free content” on Internet but it does not pay for it on your telephone. Nowadays, the Internet cannot work without advertising, but the telephone can work without it. The second difference is that telemarketing calls are very annoying and interrupting for people while targeted web ads are very innocuous.
GPS is a space-based navigation system. It provides time and location information in all weather conditions, anywhere on Earth. The concept of GPS is based on time and the known position of specialized satellites. Each satellite carries a very stable atomic clock that is synchronized to other satellites clocks and to ground clocks. This system provides critical capabilities to civil, military, and commercial users around the world. The system is created and maintained by the United States government that makes it freely accessible to anyone who has a GPS receiver.
The cell-tower triangulation (mobile phone tracking) is the ascertaining of the position or location of a mobile phone, whether stationary or moving. The localization may take place via multilateration of radio signals between different radio towers and the phone or via GPS. To find the location of a mobile phone by using multilateration of radio signals, it must have at least the roaming signal but an active call is not required.
WPS is usually used where GPS and GLONASS are not useful due to various causes including signal blockage indoors and multipath. WPS includes indoor positioning systems. The widespread localization technique is based on measuring the intensity of the received signal and the method of "fingerprinting" and is used for positioning with wireless access points.
I have found several applications that post my locations and different information that can help others to broadcast my whereabouts. The Instagram tags my location even when this option is turned off. It saves a specific data about my location based on where I post the photo. It means that anybody can see my direct location everytime I post something. However, I found the way to delete my location on Instagram. You have to tap the geotag icon on Instagram and choose all images on this map that you want to delete. The Facebook tracks the location of all my messages. However, it only works if I have location data for the app turned on. If a person wants to turn location sharing for Facebook Messenger off, he/she has to go to "Settings" on the smartphone, select "Privacy", and then select "Location Services”, then select Facebook Messenger and turn off location sharing. The most surprising thing is that Swarm broadcasts my location even if I do not check in. Moreover, if I have an option called the ‘Neighborhood Sharing’ turned on in this application, my location can be displayed by tapping the teardrop icon. I feel very uncomfortable understanding that I can be easily tracked by a stranger without even posting my direct location on media.
TECHNOLOGY IN CONTEXT: FASHION INDUSTRY
Nowadays, the technology plays a major role in this glitzy industry. The fashion industry benefits from modern technology in different ways. Today, different customers can search their favorite brand via the web or via phone and order everything they desire just in a few minutes. Accessibility to any designer or brand has broadened more than we could imagine - from mobile technology to social media. Moreover, different designs are adapted for the ready-to-wear market by using CAD (computer-aided design) tools, for example, pattern-making software. Computer software, such as ArahWeave, allows designers experiment with different colors and waves during viewing detailed, realistic samples on screen. Different fabric designs can be saved in XML format, sent to the manufacturer over the web and used directly by machines.
Taking into account the growing emphasis on the use of technology in fashion, different fashion degree programs at colleges and schools have added such courses as wearable computers, computer-aided drafting, computer-aided fashion design, etc.
