The movie Udaan is a highly acclaimed Hindi movie which encourages one to break all bindings of life and fly according to his own will. Udaan is a simple story which reflects the mindset of strict fathers who enforce their wishes on their children. The director Vikramaditya Motwane has beautifully portrayed the feelings and behavior of youths and he succeeds in narrating the story sensitively. The movie also portrays how children can revolt when their father try to impose their wishes on them. The movie is all about hope, dreams, aspirations, relationships, love, and father-son conflicts. This paper discusses the movie Udaan and several related aspects including the scenes and themes of the movie.
The story revolves around a young boy, Rohan who is like other common youngsters of his age. He appears watching an adult movie with his other friends in the very first scene of the movie and in lieu of this act he was expelled from the school. Rohan is sent back to his hometown, Jamshedpur where he meets to his father after a very long time though his father is not happy seeing him. His father is a stern and selfish man who wants Rohan to address him as sir and not dad. He comes to know for the first time that he has a stepbrother, Arjun. Rohan faces a set of restrictions, physical as well as mental abuses from his father and his life becomes claustrophobic. He is forced to work in his father’s metal factory and to study engineering in a local college. Rohan never wanted to study engineering but he wanted to be a writer. He misses his old school days and his friends, he finds himself very alone in his own home. Rohan finds one of his senior in the town who assist him at times.
The story takes a sharp turn when his stepbrother is hospitalized and rohan has to take care of him as his father leaves for an urgent business meeting. Rohan befriends with his brother and all the staffs of the hospital by entertaining them and with his humble behavior. In between when engineering results are declared, he got plunged but he tells his father that he has succeeded. His father comes with the business trip and express to put Arjun in the boarding school and ask Rohan to work full time in his factory. He also expresses to marry for the third time and hearing all theses things made Rohan frustrated. He broke his father’s car and this act landed him in the prison. When he comes out he enters into home to pack his belongings and leaves. He spends one night at his uncle’s residence and thinks about his stepbrother Arjun. He decides to take him away so that in course of saving him from the same agony that he faced. He again goes to his father’s home, takes Arjun with him and leaves for Mumbai. He punches his father when he tries to stop both of them and the movie comes to an end with the scene of Rohan and Arjun walking away holding hands of each other.
Udaan is an entertaining movie which not only entertains but also gives a massage to the society regarding the treatment of children. The movie also raises a big question regarding the future of the children. Do the parents have right to enforce their decision on their children against their will?
