Two Videos Analysis
This paper provides a critical and comprehensive analysis of the two videos to be mentioned below. The fundamental aim of this paper will be to unfold some of the ways through which the paper helps the author to understand better the role of women and men in the society. In addition, the paper will also examine some of the strengths and weaknesses of the two videos which shall be analyzed.
What’s the Devil’s Playground all about?
The Devil’s Playground can be described as being a documentary film which was produced by Lucy Walker. The documentary film explores the rite of passage of the Amish adolescent known as the “rumspringa”. Immediately after the rite of passage had been done, the male and females are released in order to explore a secular life outside the Amish community. Experiencing the outside world while undergoing the temptations and challenges of life prepared the men and women to make important decisions regarding their future life as well as learn to reject the secular life and be baptized in the Amish Church. Ideally, the chief value of the Devil’s Playground video is to unfold to the audience about the old order and the culture and lifestyle of the Amish community. The role of women and men in the society can be examined by understanding the rite of passage and what happens after the rite of passage.
What’s the bro code all about?
The Bro Code examines different ways through which certain popular cultures have continued to recognize sexism in the society more so among the boys and girls. Keith who is the pioneer of the Bro Code asserts that sexism is still portrayed in the society as being normal and desirable for young men. The film demonstrates how men, media and the surrounding cultures have continued to devalue women. In addition, the film shows various ways through which Men are tightly monitored in what is known as “man box”.
Similarities and differences of the two videos
This part of the paper shall provide a critical and comprehensive analysis of the similarities and differences of the two videos introduced above in terms of norms, values, roles, socialization and society among others. Just to begin with, it is prudent to note that norms are acceptable conduct of behavior within the society. From the analysis of the two videos, it is clear that women have to respect their husband no matter the situation in the society. For instance, in the Devil’s Playground we are told that with the exception of John, Velda and other couples of girls, women appear to have no voice in the Amish community. In fact, the film show that women play secondary roles to men. For instance, their fundamental roles more so after entering the church is to raise and take good care of their children. On the other hand, in the Bro code, women are viewed as being instruments of sex. The norm is not very different with that of the Devil’s Playground because just like in the Devil’s playground, women here are also undermined by men, the society do not value women so much as they do for their men counterpart. Women have been considered weak creatures which are only instruments of sex.
The term socialization refers to the process through which and individual hangout and share his views with other people hence learning from one another. We see socialization being rampant in the Devil’s Playground compared to the Bro code. For instance, in the Devil’s Playground, the “rumspringa” which is a rite of passage brings boys and girls together. During these events, the boys and girls are able to interact with their men counterpart and even share their views. The “rumspringa is accompanied with a tradition in which each and every teenagers attend party and if there is no party, then they have to organize for one. During the party, individuals drink alcohol, dance and even smoke. It is therefore, true that the rumspringa is characterized with moral decay. The same moral decay is also experienced in the Bro Code where men are dehumanizes females in the society. We see men raping females in the society.
Values are the principles which guide behavior. For instance, personal values can be defined as what somebody belief is right or wrong. In the Devil’s playground, we realize that the teenagers are left to decide for themselves what is right or wrong especially after undergoing “rumspringa”. For instance, the teenagers decide either to join the church or continue with the life full of misdeeds such as drinking, smoking and dancing among others. On the other hand, in the Bro Code, most individuals seem to have set their own values. For instance, most men believe that a sexiest man is considered by women to be great. Therefore, they constantly dehumanize women especially during sex. Most men believe that women are simply instruments of sex. On the other hand, women seem to have given in to the demands of men. For instance, they argue that “if you can’t beat them then join them”. This implies that most women have accepted they are of low value compared to men and therefore, they have to give in to the demands of men if they are to be successful in the society.
Roles can be defined as the function played by a given character in a given situation. The roles that have been played by both men and women in the two videos are almost the same. For instance, in the Bro Code, men have are playing the role of the head and a leader of the family while women are simply playing the role of being instruments of sex which men use to satisfy their sexual demands. This is not very different with the role played by men and women in the Devil’s playground where men plays primary role while women plays secondary roles such as taking care of children.
How the two films shape mu understanding of the role of men and women in the society.
In summary, the paper has critically and comprehensively provides differences and similarities of the two videos in terms of norms, values, socialization and roles.
