A Sherriff is a law enforcement officer whose jurisdiction is restricted within the borders of a certain county. A Sherriff officer receives his or her mandate from the state law office. A Sherriff has the mandate to arrest errant citizens within his or her jurisdiction. Other functions that fall within the mandates of a Sherriff are transportation of prisoners, control of traffic, investigation of accident scenes and many others. A Sherriff is in most cases deputized by the deputy Sherriff who assumes the Sherriff’s role in his absence.
In Los Angeles County, the Sherriff’s office operates under the mission to honorably perform duties with respect for the people’s dignity, integrity to foster right and condemn wrong acts, wisdom to use common sense to enhance fairness to all. Moreover, all officers shall condemn racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, sexism and bigotry in all circumstances. The best part of this mission statement is the “respect for people’s dignity and service with integrity”.
The Los Angeles Sherriff heads the department in collaboration with the citizens of Los Angeles County to ensure social efficiency is granted to all people. The Sherriff delegates responsibilities to deputy Sheriffs who are allocated different functions. Moreover, all employees deliver the department’s mission statement guided by the department’s core values. The department’s core values include Apprehension of criminals, prevention of criminal activities, Provide security to all citizens and their property without bias, obey the stipulated laws and apply Transparency and integrity during their time of service delivery. In addition, the department collaborates with the community in community policing program to ensure that the culprits are apprehended and ensure that the Sheriffs respond promptly to any emergency. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s department is guided by the federal laws that stipulate their functions and code of conduct.
The Orleans’s Parish Sherriff’s Office embarks on achieving its mission statement of providing public safety and service to Orleans parish citizens. The Sherriff, under the guidance of other officers in the department, provides custody and rehabilitation of inmates as well as provision of security to the court system and execution of the court’s mandate. The best part of this statement is that the department embarks on rehabilitating the inmates and not just incarcerating them. This is a manifestation of the department’s value for human rights. However, I would expand part of the statement “Public safety and service” to explain the range of services within our jurisdiction to avoid overlap of responsibilities. Moreover, all employees deliver the department’s mission statement guided by the department’s core values. The department’s values include integrity, Teamwork, Transparency, Professionalism and community responsibility. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s department is guided by the federal laws that stipulate their functions and code of conduct.
Harris county Sherriff’s office is the largest Sherriff’s office in Texas. Its mission is to augment the safety and protect the citizen’s trust through enforcement of the law with integrity and Professionalism. The major pillar in this statement is the synchronization of Integrity and professionalism in providing safety to the Texas citizens. However, the Statement is too short and vague and would, therefore, be necessary to adjust the statement to include the Limits of law enforcement jurisdiction to avoid overlap of mandates.
The Harris County department employees are guided by the core values of the department that form the precursor of achieving the department’s mission. These values include obeying the stipulated ethical code of conduct, protecting citizens selflessly, enhance professionalism and maintain public trust on our services. One of the outstanding core values in the department is enhancing social welfare of all Sheriffs’ families. This is a noble responsibility that ensures that Sheriffs are motivated all through during their service. It is a strategy characterized by emotional intelligence of a Sherriff. Additionally, the department collaborates with both the citizens and all arms of the federal government to ensure that efficient service delivery is achieved.
Mission Statement
As a new Sherriff, my mission statement will be: “To commit our profession in providing security to all citizens and the Judiciary under the guidance of moral values and the State’s Laws. Our mission will be guided by truth and executed upon satisfactory facts to ensure that culprits and the victims are served equal Justice”
The above mission statement reflects an open structure because it can be applied in any nature of service bestowed upon the department. The statement does not restrict itself to one area and, therefore, serves a common mandate to serve justice to all. The department under my authority and leadership will adopt a community policing program to enhance effective delivery of social justice by apprehending the culprits and ensuring justice is achieved to the culprit and the victim. In order to enhance cohesion between the Sherriff’s office and the citizens of the county, corporate social responsibility will one of the key objectives to enhance effective service delivery. In addition, communication will be upgraded to adopt social networking to enhance quick and efficient response to any emergency.
Conclusion
Effective service delivery by the Sheriff’s department will be achieved through community policing, respect for the Law and upholding Transparency and Integrity.
