Parking Space
I also evaluated the size of the parking lot. The size of the parking area is considerably large. From the interview I conducted on the company’s managers, it was constructed to accommodate the number of employees in the company. However, from the feedback collected from all interviewed employees, they stated that the parking space was not adequate. At times, when reporting to work, they would lack a space to pack their personal vehicles. Therefore, they would have to look for other places where they would pack their cars at a price.
One of the conclusions I arrived at for the lack of adequate parking space was that the management had not put into consideration the growing number of employees. Watson Supply Company has been improving its performance in the market. As a result, the Human Resource has to employ more workers to meet the high demand level. Nonetheless, there has been limited effort to expand the parking area to accommodate the increasing number of employees. Another reason is the increasing number of customers. The consumers visit the offices to make orders for supplies or for enquiry purposes. When the parking area for customers is full, they park their vehicles in places where employees should park. Therefore, my recommendation is that the company should increase the size of the parking lot to facilitate the increasing number of employees and customers.
Watson Supply Company should conduct an investigation for the maximum parking size required. This would be through evaluating the adequate size that would accommodate all employees and the maximum number of customers that can visit the offices at a time. This would help determine the required parking extension. For cost effectiveness, the company could target at increasing the on street parking while adhering to government regulations. This would help increase the parking area for customers. For the employees, the company could increase the parking space through constructing a parking lot on top of the building. The workers who spend most of the time doing office work could park their cars in the area.
Lights
Another issue that I investigated concerns the lighting of the parking lots. I conducted an interview in my investigation. I collected data from 20 employees. Out of these employees, 15 said that they thought the parking was badly lit. My investigations further included examining the appropriate lighting that a parking lot should have. According to City Electric Company, an appropriately lit parking lot should be lit every 50 feet.
This led to the conclusion that the lighting of the parking lot is an issue that the management of the company should address. Most of the employees complained that the parking is not well lit. This could lead to occurrence of accidents, since when one is driving into their parking space, they do not see very clearly where they are going. This is especially the case when one has come from sun lit areas in the surrounding. It is difficult for the eyes to adjust to the partially dark parking. One could therefore easily bump into another vehicle. The findings of the investigation further led to the conclusion that the parking lot is not well lit because it only has lighting every 75 feet. This is a lower frequency than the expected frequency. Therefore, the employees are right in complaining that the lighting in the parking lot is insufficient.
The Watson Supply Company should resolve the lighting problem by increasing the lighting in the parking lot. According to City Electric Company, the addition of the lighting will cost the company $5000. Although this may seem expensive to the company, it is important that the company install the additional lights. It will increase the safety of the employees as well as their productivity because they will feel that the management appreciates and minds them.
