Introduction
Writing is important in college because most subjects require that students submit essays on specific subject matters. In addition, college writing prepares us for the future when we begin working as professionals in whatever field we are in right now. However, it is easier to "speak" the words than write them. In fact, words are often taken for granted especially when they are spoken. We do not have to think much about grammar and punctuation because we can often communicate informally with anyone using conversational and everyday English. However, writing is an entirely different thing. Because we can actually "see" the words, we have to become more particular about grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation. Sometimes, these are the very reasons why it becomes more difficult to write than to express our thoughts verbally. I was in the same boat before, but fortunately, I have overcome this stage already.
Struggling with Writing
When I began with my English writing class, I was often at a loss for words to write in paper. My mind was brimming with ideas and dreams I wanted to share, but all were trapped in my mind as I was having difficulty articulating my thoughts through writing. I realized that thinking and writing are very different because in my mind, I was able to express and understand what I wanted to say. However, when it came to writing down my thoughts, the words just escaped me. Through perseverance and constant feedback from my instructor and classmates, I noticed I was becoming more and more confident in my writing. Soon, the words that once were too difficult to grasp now flow easily in my mind and through my writing.
Becoming Successful at Writing
As part of our writing exercises, I wrote five essays and a research paper. At the beginning, I could barely write anything because my mind suddenly turns blank and white as the paper in front of me. Sometimes, hours would tick away and I still have a blank paper. What helped me in my English writing class is my teacher's style in letting me complete the papers. He allows me to write at home and gives ample time to finish the papers. As a student, I frequently availed of his consultation hours where he spends time dissecting my essays and pointing out my writing mistakes. In addition, he often recommended that I fix my essay before uploading it for checking. Another activity that helped improve my writing skills is his requirement of providing feedback for my classmates in our school website. I like this because I was able to practice writing even more. I was also able to validate if I truly understand the lessons I learned from my teacher by applying what he taught and reviewing someone else's work.
I also appreciate that our teacher gave us the flexibility to choose the topics we wanted to write. Having knowledge on the subject helped me express my thoughts clearly and effectively because I knew what I wanted to say and how I should say it.
This English writing class has taught me a lot when it comes to doing research papers. I know now how to find good resources for my papers and can confidently write using the APA style of writing. Because of my teacher's patience in discussing my essays with me and ensuring that he provides valuable feedback on my papers, I began noticing positive changes on my writing skills. Most importantly, I am now more confident that with my writing, I am now able to express my thoughts clearly, concisely, and effectively.
