Who we are is the great question and filled with many layers of possible answers. One of them is what we think about ourselves, what others think about us, what we think that others think about us, what of this is real for us?
For me, what we think about who we are is inextricably connected with our interaction with others. There is something in behavioral psychology called “reinforcer”, and by definition; anything that follows a behavior that increases the chances of that behavior occurring again1. If I offer you a chocolate and you give me a compliment, “thanks” or “you are the best” I will most probably share it again. We communicate all the time, with friends, family, surrounding, etc. From that communication we receive and give; we give and receive some part of our personality.
Maybe deep inside I`m not generous, I don’t like to share, but I`m only trained with different “reinforcers” to behave as generous, who am I then?
In my opinion, we are what our actions are. We can think that we are good, bad, nice, kind, jealous or something else. But what really shows who we are, is what we do. How we do things, how we interact with others, how we walk, how we talk, what we do when we are alone, when no one is watching, what we do to our pets, friends, to our imaginary friend?
We are great beings; we have endless possibilities, great power, amazing minds and a full set of skills waiting to be used for something great.
