English 110 offers learners a platform to gain rhetorical competence, critical thinking, reading and writing skills and also knowledge of the conventions of writing. Through a thorough analysis of texts and several writing exercises, students are able to examine the issues emerging from these texts. The study of critical thinking through literature gives an insight into critical thinking using literature. Some classic literary writings contain themes that lean towards critical thinking. Literary texts talk about morality and social issues; which also form a basis form a basis for critical thinking. This course is therefore, very important for students as highlighted herein.
This course enables students to learn to use writing and reading for inquiry, thinking and learning. This is achieved through a close study of literary texts. Students practice inquiry by interrogating the issues raised in texts. Thinking is developed through trying to understand the writer’s presentation, use of language, creation and building of characters. These skills are applicable in many other fields that require critical and analytical thinking.
The English 110 course helps students to understand how to identify, evaluate, study and synthesize the right sources. As a beginner’s course, this study aids the students in their future scholarly studies and writing by training students on identification and use of scholarly sources. Using good sources enables a student to create a well-written paper. Even with the right sources, a student has to be able to analyze and synthesize the information.
This course exposes students to different genres of literature. It teaches students how different genres influence writing. This exposure to different genres and writers enables students to integrate their own ideas while examining different ideas from various writers. This course also enables students to examine the relationship between power, knowledge and language; through critical thinking.
