I am a person who has always enjoyed stories. As a kid I remember my parents reading stories to me. As human beings I think that we all live at the level of stories. It is how we navigate through life and learn about other’s lives and share our lives with others. I sometimes like to think of my own endings when they don’t end the way I want them to. I think some day I might want to be a writer. I have heard it said that the best way to become a better writer would be to become someone who reads a lot. Through this course I am hoping not only learn how stories break down and how they are put together, but I will get a chance to write on my own and weigh in my thoughts on the matter.
There are many ways to tell stories. They can be told orally. Many years ago people told stories by drawing images on the walls of caves. Today, this form is still used, people write books or comics that do not have words and just images. TV is another way that stories are told. People use radio. But what is interesting that even on the TV, or on the radio, these stores rely on writing to be produced.
The more you write the better you get at it. I hope to learn things in this class that will help me writing for the rest of my life. Life requires writing for people to be successful. To get a job often times an employer requires that a person write a cover letter in order to tell the employer while you will be a good person to work for them. Also to get to college it requires writing just to get in. Then in college most classes require you to write. It does not matter if it is engineering or math or science, writing is a skill that is necessary for all of the disciplines.
My expectations going into this course was that I would be doing a lot of reading and writing. In order to be a well rounded adult there are certain things that everyone has to know certain things, both about history or literature. It is not okay to suddenly say that I don’t know who Shakespeare is. So this course I hope will give me knowledgeable that I will be able to have for the rest of my life in dinner time conversations, coffee shops and even on dates when I need to have something to talk about.
I try not to have to many expectations when going into a course like this, but instead I like to take things a moment at a time and then evaluate it for myself. I hope to become a better writer and a more rounded reader through the duration of this course.
I also hope to learn more about myself through reading and writing. Writing is a process of self-exploration and I think that the better I get at writing the better I will know myself. Socrates’ once said that “Know thyself for the unexamined life is not worth living.” Ultimately I hope that through this class I hope to know myself and through that become a better rounded more professional person.
