I had heard people saying that the event changed their life forever, but never believed it as I was this good boy from Arkansas who loved playing outdoor games like football and baseball. I lived by each passing day with no worries. Doing crazy things with my friends like challenging each other to jump from great heights’ and running away with the money of banjo players. Arkansas has many athletic venues across the state as it promotes sports and fitness as a part of life. One day we decided to rock climb and challenged each other, the winner would get the latest Nike shoes. The prize was worth dying; it is for teenage boys. Five of us started to climb the steep hill; it had rained the day before making the hill slippery without any professional trainer or guide. We reached halfway, the climb was getting tougher. The humid weather added to our difficult task.
My friend Martin suddenly lost grip and went down like an arrow but thankfully was saved by the harness. He looked like a tiny cat from the height that we were, struggling to regain his grasp. After a few seconds, we didn’t notice any movement. We got concerned about Martin and started to come down and get hold of him. Within minutes, we brought him back safely on the ground. Martin was in unbearable pain; we took him to the hospital nearby. The doctors informed us about his condition; his spine was injured and he would be bedridden for time unknown. Martin was a state level football player, how would he accept his condition. His parents were in shock still to accept the reality.
After a day when Martin regained consciousness, he was told about his health condition. To our surprise he was very calm. Something was killing me inside; the guilt of challenging Martin to climb the rock. I use to sit outside his room every day praying for his recovery, at times trying to cheer him by my stupid jokes. I use to read and research about his condition on internet and books, finding a solution. One day I came across an article that explained how physiotherapy could help in reviving the dead nerves. I registered for the course online and use to learn the required exercises as the teacher was from India. I mailed him Martin’s reports briefing him about the latest status. The hot and cold massages followed by light exercises were done for three months. There was no movement in Martin’s body, but I was determined to set things right for my friend who wept silently when he saw the football matches on television. The exercise instructor gave Reiki healings to Martin and taught me how deep breathing can change the mindset and increase Marin’s will power. I took a break from my studies for six months. In the fifth month, we were delighted to see Martin move his finger and signal. The improvement had begun, and there was no looking back. After another month, Martin could move his hand. The therapy continued to show its wonders.
It’s been a year now and we are at the same place, the same hill not to rock climb but to thank God. While we breathe the fresh air and enjoy the sun, the rowdy boys now have fun but not at the cost of endangering their lives. It is only after losing something that we learn to value it. I have learned that it’s good to have fun but how to have fun is very important. This event taught me my lesson and gave me a friend for life.
