Sonia Sotomayor: The Person I hope I can Meet
“I don’t believe we should bend the Constitution under any circumstance. It says what it says. We should do honor to it” (Pitney, Huffington Post). These words come from Sonia Sotomayor, the very first Hispanic U.S. Supreme Court Justice. A woman I admire the most. She is someone I would want to meet someday. She has shown courage in her personal challenges, she has worked hard to excel in her academic training, and she is dedicated to her profession. Even a brief encounter with her will definitely make an impact in my life as it has with others.
Personal challenges
Limitations in income and health did not prevent Sonia from living a normal life. She lives a social housing at the Bronx in New York with her immigrant parents. Her father died when she was just nine years old. A year earlier she was diagnosed with diabetes. Her mother worked as nurse and singlehandedly raised her and her brother. Her love of reading was developed at an early age.
Sonia is a role model to every student in the country. I dream to accomplish even just a little of what she had attained. Graduating with honors, or gaining scholarships are what students hope to achieve. She has worked hard in school and has graduated at the top of her class from her elementary grades to university. She attended premier universities in the US, the Princeton for her undergrad and Yale for Law school. Her excellence, intelligence and dedication to her craft are all evident in the recognitions awarded to her by these prestigious institutions.
Dedication to her profession
Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial experience is said to be longer than anyone had in the Supreme Court for more than 70 years. She has worked as a prosecutor and a trial judge. When she was with the Court of Appeals, she was assigned to the Second Circuit. Here, she handled a tremendous number of cases including cases on constitutional law and complicated lawsuits with business organizations.
Conclusion
Judge Sonia Sotomayor is an interesting person. Her accomplishments result from years of hard work and discipline. She has not allowed personal limitations to prevent her from living a full life from childhood to adulthood. I wish I could have the chance to meet her someday. She is my role model. Even from afar she has already made an impact in my life.
