Diets with the least environmental impact - Carbon is the main component of the building blocks of living organisms which are carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins. The composition of carbon in the three biomolecules is relatively comparable, but carbohydrates have a higher composition of oxygen occupying about 50% of the carbohydrate molecule while proteins have higher concentrations of nitrogen due to the amino acid building blocks. The animal kingdom has the highest concentration of proteins as their building blocks while the plant kingdom is basically made up of carbohydrates.
There are three main diets in the world with many other small variants and they include vegans, vegetarian, and the third group comprising of those people who mix their diets. Vegetarians are individuals who do not to consume meat and fish products by their own choice. Vegans, on the other hand, have made a choice not use consume animal products and furthered it on by not using any other products derived from animals like wool, fibers, and so on. Vegans are commonly divided into two groups: dietary vegans or strict vegetarians have a stand of not consuming any product of animal origin be it meat, eggs, or any other animal product; ethical or environmental vegans are strict vegetarians who push this philosophy further on into their lives by campaigning against the use of animal products for any other purpose arguing that the use of animals for consumption or to produce other products is not environmentally friendly and sustainable. The last group of dieters is the mixed diet group of individuals who consume both animal and plant products in their diets.
Of the three groups, the dieters with the smallest impact on the environment is the strict vegetarian because the only pollutant from their diets is the carbon products like Carbon (IV) oxide and Carbon (II) oxide when they are excreted to the environment. Meat-eaters cause the highest impact on the environment because of excretion of both carbon and nitrogen products especially the oxides that contribute highly to global warming.
Concerns of Overpopulation – Population growth in any location results when the rates of births and immigration exceed the rates of deaths and immigration out of the locality. The number of people occupying the earth saw big growth in last 100 years because of decreased death rates, improved nutrition, improved health care provision, increased life expectancy among other factors. The current world population stands at about 7 billion people and is projected to hit 9 billion by the year 2042. This is an alarming rate and is a big cause for concern as the strain on the environment may not be sustainable with time. With the increasing population, the resources on the earth will not be able to maintain the population and will deplete, the environment will also be majorly affected as overpopulation comes with it pollution making the environment’s support of human life less and less with time. This will be basically due to the increase in global warming and climate change where habitable regions may no longer be able to support human life because of the changed climates. Social amenities are also bound to be strained because they will not be able to support the corresponding numbers of people per amenity and this will go a long way in affecting the provision of education, healthcare, and transport.
Unemployment will also skyrocket and this will definitely lead to a rise in crime rates as the unemployed youth look for alternative ways to earn a living to sustain their lives by being able to afford the already scarce resources and commodities. Most of the time, the unemployed youth engage in things that will enable them to get money. These concerns, among many others, are bound to grow bigger and bigger with time as there is no foreseeable drop in population growth in the near future.
The biggest effect of overpopulation- although population growth may not be a problem on its own; the resources on the earth are not growing any bigger and better to meet this growth. It, therefore, means the earth has to struggle to meet a higher demand with the same resources it was using for a lower demand for its resources.
This impact is likely to go a long way in influencing all the factors mentioned above and many others including loss of natural habitats like the rainforests, which once occupied 14% of the total area on the earth but they now occupy a paltry 6% and the area is likely to reduce further, because man is slowly encroaching as the search for new human settlements intensifies. With the loss of the rain forests, which act as water catchment areas, there will be reduced rain and this will, in turn, affect crop production in the long run. If the rate of population growth goes as its currently is, the rain forests may be depleted by the year 2050 to cater for the bigger numbers of people.
The growing pressure on the earth’s resources will lead more intensive farming to produce more food using the lesser land. This has a negative impact as it will further deplete the soil of its nutrients, losing its productivity with time. Reduced soil productivity implies less output in terms of crop production, causing famines and other problems associated with little or no food.
As long as there is less food to feed all the people there will be many cases of malnutrition with which comes increased susceptibility to many ailments. If the resultant ailments are not dealt with accordingly and with the urgency they deserve, people will start dying of malnutrition since the immune system is weakened due to the lack of some important elements present in food. Lack of essential elements in the body causes several body malfunctions. In the long run, the life expectancy will rapidly go down and more people may die early in their lives because of decreased immunity.
