Australian Textile manufacturing industry is one among the developed in the world. According to Weller (2007, pp.2), ever since the 19th century, Australia used organic materials such as silk, wool, hemp, leather and jute among others for its production. It had also a variety of indigenous plant materials such as banyan and pandanus fibres among others (McFadyen, 1948, pp.138-139). However, the textile manufacturing industry of the nation today is mixing organic materials with other media for its production. The advancement in technology has presented the industry with a combination of technologies promoting innovativeness in the industry. Pacific Brands is one of the known textile company operating in Australia, New Zealand, UK, and China. It has its headquarters in Melbourne Australia and is committed to creating unique and valued brands for its customers.
The industry is encouraging sustainable business practices and promoting social corporate responsibility by focusing on the development of textile items that have less impact on the environment as reported by Horn (1984, pp.4). This is taking place from the gathering of the raw materials to the distribution of the finished products. Besides, the Australian textile manufacturing company is also fostering social corporate responsibility by expanding its distribution channels to ensure they reach their customers wherever they are. Furthermore, the industry has also employed many people thus helping to enhance their living standards.
Despite the move taken by the efforts taken by the Australian textile manufacturing industry to foster success, there are various challenges affecting its development. Browne (2015) reveals that inadequate textile expertise is one great challenge facing the industry. Although the distribution channels continue to expand, increased energy usage and increased costs is another key challenge that is influencing the growth and development of this Australian industry negatively (Schmidt 2016). Furthermore, the textile manufacturing industry is one of the most competitive in the global market. Finally, competition is a great challenge for Australian textile manufacturing industry. Some of the competitors include nations like USA, France, Turkey, and Italy among others.
