The problem
Living things cannot thrive alone but depend on each other for survival. Organisms (human beings, plants, and animals) must maintain a balance of nature to enable them to survive in different environments. However, some issues arise that cause environmental imbalance problems and affect the relationship between these organisms. Sharma defines environmental pollution as any adverse change in the chemical, biological, and physical characteristic of land, water, or air (Sharma 1). Environmental pollution is a major imbalance that greatly affects lives of these organisms. The problem of environmental pollution continues to raise many concerns in the world today. The rapid growth in population, over-dependent on land and other natural features for production, and the advancement in industrialization lead to the introduction of many environmental pollutants that affect the normal growth of human beings and other living and non-living elements. Environmental pollutants fall under three categories, which are natural, air, and artificial pollutions.
Environmental pollution causes many problems that affect the normal growth and development of living things. Activities as the use of gasoline engines and other industrial processes lead to the production of air pollutants such carbon, hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, and other poisonous gases that are dangerous when inhaled. Additionally, such gases like the carbon dioxide deplete the ozone layer leading to the greenhouse effect. Moreover, the growth of the atomic energy sector leads to an increase in radioactivity in the atmosphere adding more to the global warming.
Water pollution causes significant problems to the environment. Various biological, chemical and physical changes caused by human activities such as disposing industrial wastes to water bodies, using chemicals near water sources, or oil spills makes the water unsuitable for use. Water pollution leads to the spread of water-borne diseases to human beings, destruction of marine lives, the presence of sewage waste causes a reduction in the dissolved oxygen that affects water lives and interferes with the quality of the underground water.
Problem solved
The solution to the problem of environmental pollution is a joint effort by everybody in the society. The problem of environmental pollution affects everybody either directly or indirectly. Environmental and ecological experts have suggested numerous methods of controlling environmental pollution. Firstly, the advancement of technology leads to the manufacture of environmental-friendly vehicles that use green energy as opposed to gasoline. Combustion of fossil fuel is a major cause of air pollution that affects the environment. The introduction of solar powered vehicles acts as a lasting solution to the problem. On the other hand, technology experts have introduced methods of trapping poisonous gases in the atmosphere and reducing it into a less adverse product. The government introduced regulations demanding all industries to use advanced technologies to promote zero emission of poisonous gases. The Environmental Protection Agency introduced a strategy under the president’s Climate Action Plan that assists in reducing greenhouse gases emission in the rapidly growing industrial nation (EPA).
Second, water pollution causes a major problem for the environment. Modern techniques such as treatment of sewage before disposing it to the water help prevent pollution. On the other hand, governments put strict measures to ensure industries from disposing dangerous chemicals into the water. Moreover, people using water as the form of transport should avoid spilling oil into the water to help save the marine life.
Environmental experts also introduce environmental conservation programs that help solve the problem of environmental pollution. The presence of many environmental promotions and campaigns helps to enlighten the community on the importance of maintaining the environment clean and safe.
