In the United States at the moment, any person has the right to own a gun. Someone once joked that buying a rifle in the United States is easier than purchasing a personal computer. This gives the general view of how the matters are at the moment as far as guns are concerned in the U.S. With the recent mass shootings and the wake of terrorist attacks, there has been a great concern about gun control. Different factions have furiously debated on a different position, the pro and against gun control. I believe that it is the highest time that the United States came up with a policy to ensure gun control. The United States needs gun control policies that will ensure that guns do not get into the hands of wrong people.
Over 100,000 people get killed in the United States through shooting. 140 children were accidentally shot in 1996 alone. Data indicates that 40 percent of American homes own guns and that a bigger percentage of the American population relies on guns as the primary means of protection. Gun control in the United States dates back to the colonial times when the blacks were not allowed to bear any weapon. However, in 1939, the Supreme Court passed a law that allowed anyone in the United States to bear weapons. Since then, different incidents have been witnessed where guns have been used to kill the innocent. The question is whether the current laws are enough or are they too lenient.
Gun control is good because it will ensure that dangerous weapons do not get into the hands of wrong people. The Orlando shooting which claimed the lives of more than fifty American citizens should be a reason enough to believe that wrong people are within the access of dangerous weapons in the United States. The United States has witnessed more than ten mass shootings between 1982 and 2016. Japan is a country with stiffer gun control policies and should be the baseline for the United States since it has reported the least number of people killed by guns in decades. It reported only four people in 2012
Arming everyone is not the solution to the domestic violence the United States is currently facing. According to some politicians such as Ben Carson, the United States needs to arm its citizens to ensure that they are safe from any terrorist attack. I believe gun control will offer more benefit than arming the citizens since the end result of arming will be homicides and mass shootings. The United States, therefore, needs gun control to manage the number of guns in the hands of its citizens.
Gun control is good as it will help the authority to keep data of who owns what. Currently, people are free to buy guns wherever they want. This gives anyone a chance to own a gun even the ex-convicts and teenagers who can mishandle the weapon. It is not right to say that everyone is not responsible enough to handle guns in the US, but there must be criteria used to acquire such weapons and everyone must take the responsibility of using that weapon wisely. Thus, gun control can bring back the use of guns in a wiser way.
Those opposing gun controls argue that the current policies are good and that everyone in the United States should be free to buy guns whenever they want. Most of those who think in this direction lack the trust in the security that the government is already providing. I don’t believe that it is a wiser idea to think that the people should take the responsibility of providing themselves security on their own hands. Therefore, those against gun control are ill-advised and should rethink their stance. I can conclude by saying that for the domestic security to prevail, the United States needs gun control that will limit the number of guns owned by an individual and bar some people who have criminal history from owning guns.
