My ultimate goal after completing my Bachelor in Science of Nursing is to become an Intensive Care Unit Nurse. I took the Certified Nurse Assistant course about one year ago and started working as a Clinical Partner at a Medical Surgical Unit around that time. Over time working in this unit, I have realized I would rather work with more critical patients, and that is the reason behind my choice to concentrate in ICU nursing. I like the fast paced environment of this type of unit. Also, the acuity of ICU patients will make me develop strong critical thinking skills.
During these three months of practicum rotations, I would like to strengthen and improve my critical thinking in nursing and apply nursing theories through evidence-based practices. I am also interested in having the opportunity to provide patient and family teaching and develop new relationships. Analyze and apply legal and ethics consideration regarding the nursing scope and patient rights, by the first week. Nursing process – Practice general and focus assessment ( for example, cardiac, respiratory and abdominal) by the first three weeks. Diagnostic, Planning and interventions by midterm.
Another important objective for me is to be able to prioritize patient needs and manage time adequately correctly. I believe that management of time is one of the skills a nurse should master in order to offer a high quality of care for his/her patients by week 10 of the practicum. Prioritization is fundamental when it comes to nursing so that I will pay close attention to my preceptor’s ability and I expect to improve my prioritization skills as much as possible during this rotation.
I also wish to gain awareness of my strengths which include collaboration/ team working/ interdisciplinary communication and my weaknesses in skills performances (For example, IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, tracheostomy care, NG tube insertion and medication administration) goal by week 12. Moreover, I look forward to improving my writing skills documentation (SBAR ) by week 14 and be able to work independently with one or two patients by the end of the clinical experience.
I am certain that the senior practicum experience will make me develop as well as utilize intricate decision- making skills and critical thinking expertise to create and manage plans of care for patients in order to enhance patient outcomes and health. After this experience is over, I would love to apply for the residency program at V.A. hospital, as it’s my final goal to work with the veteran population.
