The demands were appropriate to the goal, in that they focused on funding and development of ethnic education, which was the primary goal of the strike. The strikers wanted ethnic studies, or study programs that would prepare students who identified as members of a particular ethnic community to serve within that community, a racial appropriate, or culturally mindful way. The education that these students desired was different form the main stream, in that it community, culture and ethic ideation at the center of the curriculum, instead of allowing the curriculum to remain generic. This is significant because the reality is that most curriculum is aimed at the majority, and so is decidedly Caucasian in its concerns. However, the development of ethic study programs, organized and controlled by members of the ethic community they were designed to serve, would move away from this traditional delivery system.
Bearing this goal in mind, there seems to be two demands, within the list of demands made by the protestors which are most significant. The first, was that the programs be developed, organized, and controlled, long term, by people from the ethnic background being studied. Currently, for example, there was not a single Native American working full time in the Native American studies department, however, under the new program, according to the protestors demands, there would be Native American people controlling the program, and running it, so that it was more culturally on point. The second demand, that seems most important, was that there would be protection for funding for the programs expansion. The demand letter was for not only the development of ethic programs currently in demand by the students, but also future programs, as they were organized by groups of students who wanted them. This is significant because it would allow the program to grow and change in a way that reflected the culture of the students enrolled there.
