One of the main obstacles to organizational success is the lack of effective communication among the organization’s members. It is very difficult to accomplish goals as a group if individual group members are unable to relay to each other and to the group their different needs, challenges, expectations, reservations and concerns, ideas, and inspirations. For example, a commonly experienced communication hardship that will often result in failure to achieve goals occurs when members of a group are unable to agree on the specific details of what their goal is. They may have different ideas of what “success” means in regard to the goal because the goal is too verbose, nondescript, or vague. A poorly defined objective statement leads to unaligned expectations, creating confusion, hindering collaboration, and ultimately yielding only disappointment.
Similar to how a poorly communicated goal can hinder the success of an organization and negatively affect the career satisfaction of its members, a poorly worded résumé can hinder job seekers’ success and rob them of the opportunity to experience career satisfaction by prolonging their unemployment. An effective résumé will not only demonstrate a job candidate’s qualifications for the sought-after position, it will make the candidate stand out from the other applicants he or she is competing against. Thus, a successful résumé will make use of effective communication. For example, effective résumés are custom-tailored to each job for which they are submitted so that they include only the relevant and applicable aspects of the applicant’s work history. A well-written résumé, like a well-stated organizational objective, will be focused, direct, and easily understood by those who have to base decisions on it.
