Multiculturalism and diversity are important elements to an individual’s and community’s experience. As a testament to this statement, I recently worked with refugees in my community. This experience would help me understand the various customs, behaviors, and values that formed an essential part of their lives. It was also an experience I hoped to offer me a well-rounded education on multiculturalism. The following discussion details my individual, relational, communal effect analysis of the time spent at this event. It proves that by attending such events, I would appreciate the value of cultural diversity in broadening my horizons.
First, I believed that the exposure would shape my cultural perspectives given the refugee community compared to my peers. Ideally, I was looking to get as much of practical experiences as possible when I signed up for this placement. I wanted to experience the effect of diverse and existing off-campus environments as well as compare issues of diversity in both situations. I found that the off-campus environment provided a more practical yet challenging learning setting. It was just the appropriate situation I required for personal and professional development as a student. Particularly, I learned that practical experience on diversity is essential for the fulfilment of both cases of development. I also discovered that a practical multicultural environment was crucial in strengthening my individual fabric of the society.
Second, today’s communities seek to teach its members the importance of having a diversity of cultures in their midst. My experience here offered the required evidence to prove that diversity helps develop one’s relational skills. The idea was that I learned a significant deal from my interaction with these individuals. The group I worked with compromised of people from various gender, racial, cultural, and social economic backgrounds. This diversity meant that they had plenty to offer in ways that would benefit my personal and professional life. For instance, during one of the interactive sessions, I talked to one of the refugees who shared her experiences on the causes and effects of asylum seeking. The experience broadened my relational knowledge of the basic functioning of the visiting and host societies.
Finally, it is vital noting that attending such an event and facilities helps assimilate societies into the global community. This idea is contrary to the common belief that refugees have a detrimental effect on host communities. Evidently, their presence drains precious and basic community resources. Another notion is that hosting refugees would take away thousands of jobs from residents and cause undesirable upward pressures on essential amenities. However, the insights that followed this cultural event proved otherwise. The simple idea of having them live and earn a living among locals makes the action seem a more noble idea. It also acknowledged the fact that the community recognizes the refugee population as comprising of numerous individuals from different cultures and upbringing. Their presence in the community introduced new yet desirable traditions to residents. Learning about these traditions was valuable in equipping both residents and the visitors with unique philosophies that are vital to the overall learning experience.
In conclusion, the above discussion offers enough to prove that working in multicultural environments facilitates one’s needs to appreciate the value to cultural diversity in broadening their horizons. Indeed, most college students have limited experiences outside the campus environments. Their idea of a professional world only often exists within the confinements of a clinical campus. Upon graduation, their college bubble bursts exposing them to a real world consisting of individuals from different diversities. This time exists as the toughest of all transitions in the learning process. Therefore, it is vital that all students participate in activities that introduce them to different concepts and ideas around cultures.
