My class experience while learning about negotiation in management entailed different essential lessons such as the definition and explanation of negotiation, and the drivers of negotiation. It also entailed the mistakes and the biases involved and the processes of negotiation. The experience exposed me to different improvement aspects. For instance, I identified ways to improve my ability to negotiate effectively as well as analyze the negotiation situations and the behavior of the involved subjects in order to evaluate the alternatives and apply the best tactics. I was also able to develop my own strategic plan that ensures effective and efficient negotiations (BLR, 2011). The class experience also helped me develop a tool box with tactics that I can use in different negotiation cases. Finally, I was able to gain confidence in my negotiation skills as well as a greater understanding of my strengths, weaknesses, and myself as a whole.
How Negotiation could help me in the Future
Most people spend a lot of time every day negotiating for options that favor them. As such, negotiation skills are very important to everyone, especially managers. In future, negotiations would help me in effecting my managerial duties. For instance, I would stand out as an effective negotiator by employing aspects of ethics, emotions, and power in negotiating. As such, I would be in a position to build and improve on the vital relationships at the workplace which is important for all supervisors (BLR, 2011). The negotiation skills would also help me save time for other duties since I would not have to spend time arguing with others and forcing them to do what I want. Additionally, knowing when to employ third party negotiators would boost my achievements as a manager since I would effectively negotiate for the best options for my firm (BLR, 2011). I would, therefore, be in a position to achieve important goals for my department and the whole organization.
