In 1980, then presidential candidate, Ronald Regan, used the term “Make America Great Again” as a promise that, if elected, he would address the growing concerns of the American people who were living in an America wriggled with unemployment and inflation, and restore a sense of supremacy that appeared to be escaping them.
The struggles that the Americans were undergoing during that Regan 1980 run for president were not indicative of who Americans considered themselves to be; rather, masses of people felt marginalized and crippled because of low income or no income, and inflation suggested that as a collective Americans didn’t quite have it all together.
After all, this is the place that reduced the “Great” in front of “Britain” to a mere skeleton of its former self, bastardized Britain’s language, and spread American English around the globe, with a sort of miscreant arrogance in mockery of the high noses usually associated with Great Britain. The America that used its power, money and influence to “dumb down” everything, and make dumbing down correct and fashionable, and to the detriment of well-educated, knowledgeable, intelligent people, just because it could, was at a crisis —in need of drastic change, —a restoration. And, Ronald Regan was promising that he could do it. But here is Donald Trump, more than 35 years later promising to do the very same thing. What is it about America’s greatness that seems to be escaping, or eluding the American people lately? Could it be that America’s greatness is not real? Could it be that its greatness is a mere mirage painted with a thin brush wet with ink of deceit and bullying? Or is it really that America’s greatness lies it its compassion for people on a global level, and its democratic posture it affording everyone the opportunity to obtain wealth and prosperity through hard work and persistent drive. Moreover, what does it even mean to “Make America Great Again”? A version of America’s greatness paints America as a hero, while another paints its greatness as wealth and power carved out of the backs of persons of low socio-economic status.
In the “hero” version “Make America Great Again” is not just a slogan, it’s a serious call to action. Something that moves Americans to get up and make some noise, ruffle feathers and even to go out and literally fight to regain something that they believe is either being stolen from them, or has been stolen from them. America has been considered to be the country of many ordinary people; it is the place to which persons from every country all around the world want to immigrate. The notion of the American dream, spread world-wide and caught a hold of the spirit of people’s dreams. The American dream promises that persons of any level can acquire wealth be prosperous and have success as long as they are diligent and hard-working. Many individuals decide what success is for them, and believe that whatever it is they can get it in America. Several persons who live in countries in which it is difficult to get a U.S. visa, compromise their morals, and risk everything to come to America to pursue their American dream. They are ready to do anything to become a citizen of the United States, because they want to live in a country which provides amazing possibilities and impressively high standards of living in comparison to other countries.
But, what does the word “America” mean to the global society? Is it just the name, the fourth biggest country in the world or the most powerful community, or may it be understood by individuals as a country with an “idolized meaning of the life” ? Basically, “America” is just one of the possible names of the strong country. It is great because it takes care of its citizens and give prominence to their interests. It is like a great artist or writer opening up new possibilities and broadening the horizons for its inhabitants. It writes a history in which every citizen deserves to have the best and to live in the best country, and tries to afford them this privilege. Figuratively speaking America is the country that knows how to make its citizens happy; and connotatively speaking, it is a place in which every individual can find a good job, a competitive salary and a happy life. Moreover, it holds the connotation of success. The word “great” connote attributes to a set of associations, not simply to the country which has enormous dimensions , but rather a country that specializes in all spheres and is known worldwide for its scientific contributions. The figurative meaning of the word “great” is to know how to make it successfully.
What is more, the United States has proven to be a great country. Each year millions of people try to win a chance to live in what they consider to be paradise. They take part in various amnesty and diversity visa programs; others file the forms for their relatives and wait more than a decade for them to come to America. Why do so many people want to live in America? The answer is obvious, everyone knows that America provides an opportunity to make a fresh start, and acquire knowledge upon which they will be evaluated accordingly. The road to success is near in the United States of America, and that is why so many people associate this mighty and great country with prosperity. Can one political member or his team make America great? In fact, they cannot. The success of the country is based on each inhabitant; every individual may build the country from the inside. Furthermore, the country opens its doors to all individuals who knock on it. The United states of America has made its nation the most virtuous on Earth and has gone further than any other countries in establishing human rights. America is known as the most influential and the greatest democracy in the world, as it has universal suffrage. Not only that, but the government is constantly held accountable to the individuals. The country promotes equal rights and opportunities to all the citizens, the ability to vote, to express their minds in petitions or strikes, and it also gives a chance to say what should be changed or how the country should be run. The United States of America is definitely great. It is proven to be among the top five best places on the Earth to live and gain an education. It is a wealthy country and thinks of itself mainly as a mother, a great mother that brings up her children. The American nation is free, free to make choices, free to live and experience amazing and fuller life in a country where freedom really matters.
All things considered, America may be compared to a mighty warrior, that has overcome high unemployment and inflation in the nineteenth century. Not long ago it was a target of terroristic organizations, that used a series of eleven attacks. Although it was terrorized from the inside, it managed to become even stronger than ever before. The future of the country is in the hearts of its nation; its citizens will make America not only rich, strong, and safe, but also a great Motherland, whose name will be known overseas for centuries.
Or will it? Is there another America that must be talked about out loud? In our whisper we know of another that people on the outskirts and beyond don’t hear about too often, although some of them have come face-to-face with America’s hypocritical practices.
The media gets to make or break people. They tell the story of an America they want the world to know. Here are some of the things that are consistent with America’s great: In a land far away from the United States young people dream of this land; in some dreams the streets are paved with gold, and money hangs from trees low enough to be plucked like a ripe fruit that makes the mouth water. They are made to believe that everyone lives in nice homes, maybe even those with the white picket fence, the dog and the 2.5 children. (Figuring out the half child has not yet been solved.) Jobs are abundant, and crime is low in this world they imagine. No one is hungry here and life happens only on Easy Street.
In fact, though, the dream of America is just that, a dream. The reality of immigrants coming here is that there are not streets of gold, no money on trees, no continuous harmony. There is of course opportunity. But in this America the opportunity rides on the back of the credit cards and the lending companies. There is a culture of “I must have it right now”, which is eventually the hook that paralyzes American citizens and residents into the prison of debt. The outcomes of being in this situation is not one of success or prosperity; it is one of stress, obesity, diabetes, alcoholism and such the like. Another product of the American spending culture is a compromise in morals. People learn to rip off the services intended for the underprivileged; they lie on their tax returns; they are made to belive that this is an expected component in getting ahead.
America is indeed great, but its greatness is a pictured design through America’s media, history writers, citizens, and the American Government who insists that we have to create the reality that we want. So the racial prejudice that exists here, the poverty, the crime is a part of its greatness, because America is a Capitalist society. According to Dictionary.com, in Capitalism “ private individuals and corporations, rather than public entities fuel the production, distribution and exchange of wealth, in an economic system of investment in and ownership by these entities.” Capitalism by definition is not a social program, but an individual one; the fittest of the fit. In this system someone becomes wealthy. In this system some has to be poor because wealth cannot exist without poverty. But it is not the poverty that is drawing people to America, it is the hope that they will not be the poor ones. The greatness of America, then, lies also in this hope. But today, the crisis lies in the fact that a program that caters to America’s health care too much resembles Socialism, so must shakes the integrity of the American ideal –prosperity and success.
The greatness lies in the fact that Americans can in hypocrisy practice extraordinary renditions one day, and in the same day condemn it. But it is America, and people still rush to its shores, and sneak through its borders because it is the greatest storyteller, and everyone loves a great story.
