An older white woman with osteoporosis had been reported. She was about 52 years old having diffuse bone pain for the past several years after menopause. She also had a history of fractures of wrist and left hip. She reported that increasingly worsening condition of the pain was making it difficult for her to do normal daily activities. She kept her up-to-date about her gynecological exams, and her past mammograms were also normal. She had never smoked or used alcohol. Her family history showed that her mother had a history of osteoporosis, hypertension, and non-insulin dependent diabetes. Her father also had hypertension. There was no history of arthritis, breast disorders, and thyroid or other such metabolic disorders (Simmermacher, 2004).
She was using soy herbal supplement as well as vitamin E 400 IU every day. She showed awareness about preventive healthcare. Her treatment plan included calcium supplementation at the dose of 1200 mg along with vitamin D daily (Simmermacher, 2004). Vitamin D could be administered in the dose range of 800 IU and 1000 IU daily. Orange juice along with calcium could also help the patient in providing almost same content as milk (Buttaro, 2013). Moreover, alendronate sodium 10 mg daily and conjugated estrogens 0.625 mg daily was also given to the woman. This therapeutic strategy helped in providing sufficient relief and prevention of future bone loss (Simmermacher, 2004).
After symptom relief and tolerance of medications, weight-bearing exercise, and walking routine along with education about well-balanced diet had been introduced to improve muscle endurance and bone mass. Moreover, education about following the treatment was also important to get desired outcomes (Simmermacher, 2004). Fall risks have also to be managed in the older patients of osteoporosis as falls could increase the chances of fractures (Vondracek & Linnebur, 2009).
