Temperament plays a significant role in the development of adjustments and social competence. The support for this theory emanates from a number of studies conducted in North America and Western Europe. However, most of the effects of temperament on development take place in the cultural context. Further, temperament makes a substantial contribution in the development of social functioning and peer relationships. I hold the opinion that temperament may play a significant role in influencing the behavior of people. However, the influence on behavior is likely to be constrained by the cultural and social context. For instance, a group of self-oriented cultures and norms may place differing values on the fundamental dimensions of the socio-emotional functioning such as self-control and social initiative. Furthermore, these cultural values, in my opinion, have an effect on the parental socialization goals and beliefs. They may also play a bigger role in regulating parental attitude towards certain childhood behaviors. Such behaviors include shy-inhibited behavior. In addition, the early socialization experience of children in a family setting may have dire consequences on how they behave and respond to the behavior of other peoples during peer interaction. As a result, the link between a temperamental trait and a pattern of peer interaction and relationships may vary across different cultures. The article tackles the relationship between shyness-inhibition and its relationship with peer interaction and relationships in the Chinese and North American children from the contextual and development perspective. From the discussion is can clearly argue that the social and cultural circumstances play a significant role in determining the function of individual socio-emotional characteristics in peer relationships. However, the author should have gone ahead and explained the effect of temperament on the political stand of individuals.
The conceptual model concerning fundamental temperament dimensions, cultural context, and social functioning was helpful in understanding the broader contextual perspective. However, I still believe that the model was largely speculative and supporting evidence is required for the general framework and for the specific components. The study on the article mainly focused on shyness-inhibition, compliance, presocial and social behaviors, and parenting. I believe that many other aspects need to be tackled in the future. Such include socioeconomic functioning such as aggression, disruption and the internalization problems need to be investigated in Chinese and other cultures. The article also considers parenting beliefs and practices as the major mediator of cultural influence functioning in the model and research. I believe that child temperament and the process of parenting may interact in the transactional manner in their contributions o behavioral and social development. However, these transactional process needs to be explored in the context of the culture. In addition, the article focuses on the relation between temperament and relationships and peer interactions. It has been shown that children and teens represent an exclusive aspect of peer experience which may contribute to the social and psychological adjustments which are beyond rejection and peer acceptance. In future, such studies should be conducted to establish whether children’s friendship differs across different cultures and the role played by temperament and socialization in determining cultural variations. Finally, the study has been conducted in Chinese population, and so, it would be counterproductive if the same research is conducted in other European countries and the world at large. Also, the children who conducted the research were from urban centers, so much care should be taken when generalizing the rural population.
