A DEGREE AND CAREER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE 2
I’ve always liked science and had a knack for gadgets. As I grew older I got a little more interested in computers, cell phones and things of that nature. Twenty years ago the world used plain cell phones, and large monitor computers. That has all changed and new ideas and innovations are leading the industry with new technology. Many people are now using smart phones, you don’t have to press a button anymore because its touch screened. Voice activation is another great part of it. All of these things we can now do unlike two decades ago when they were not even thought of. Computer science made this possible and getting a degree in that field is worth it for that and many other reasons.
There is a growing demand for students who just graduated with a degree in computer science or computer technology. Many people are not aware but those same students helped to put together some the world’s most notorious sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It takes more than just an average mind to complete such a task and I feel I am up for the challenge. Being able to compute, configure mathematically and still maintain focus on current and future goals are great assets of mine. I’ve always wanted to know what it would be like to be a software developer. Then I realized I would have to major in computer science to find out.
The job fields and career offer a vast amount of opportunity once I get the degree with a Bachelor of Science major. Many may support and settle for information technology or IT, however it goes way beyond that. I can select from Software system developer, Business Intelligence Analyst, Computer Systems Engineer, Database Administrator or even Web Developer. No matter which direction I go in I can never fall short of my goals with all of the opportunities that lies ahead of me. Even if I leave one field and go into the next I am still learning and evolving in knowledge taking with me the prior job’s experience.

In 2015 there was an estimated available jobs of 165,000 positions in that field alone. Although their titles and duties vary the basic salary full time margin ranged about $90,000.00 Achieving a degree in this field is rewarding academically since you can take the knowledge you learned with you anywhere you go. However, based on the salary, it pays off to have such a high qualified background. When I used to hear people say they are a Computer Programmer or Network Systems Administrator they actually had the same degree but different titles. After obtaining a degree in this field and having a career with a title I am not pleased with I could select another career using the same requirements and learn something new.
The University of Bridgeport has a rich history and has been around for almost one hundred years. They offer a great amount of space to enjoy and study academic work. They also host a variety of undergraduate studies. After graduation, the student may return to complete majors in other fields. So it is possible for me to attend for a few years and continue my education and furthering my career and goals in order to achieve my mission. I do see myself helping other students on campus whether it is tutoring in science courses or starting my own computer science club to reach out to others like myself.
The University of Bridgeport’s mission is aligned with my own. I am seeking a degree in a program geared towards a professional career. I believe they can teach and instruct myself as well as other future, hopeful students with rich academic knowledge. I have a passion for math and science both and intend to share my knowledge with other students who may struggle in these subjects. I would love to prove that I am tool the university could use to help further the education of other students in need of a tutor or role model. In the future I hope to create an app for students and faculty members at different institutions to use once I’m in my career field.
