There are many principles that should be considered by the counselors. Usually the societies where the counselors work quite diverse. It is important to remember that there are certain standards and beliefs that counselors ought to follow no matter what. Cultural diversity should not prevent counselors from helping people.
According to Ethno Connect: “Diversity is nothing more than a difference from the majority” (Ethno Connect, 2015). All people are different and just because they do not match to the vast majority it does not make them better or worse from the others. Counselor should always remember that. Chapter 10 in Granello more detailed presents the topic of diversity. In chapter we may see that people can be different and there is a different percentage of diverse populations in every sphere of our life. In chapter we see that stereotypes were used to classify people (Granello, 2012). All people were created equal by God. And there is no reason to think of all the stereotypes that we may attach to ethnicity, gender, social status, culture. Commandment 2 tells us “You shall not make idols” (Bennett, 2016). All of the stereotypes were imposed to us by this image of what perfect people should be and how they should behave. Therefore, social workers should refer back to the Bible in order to be professional in their work.
In conclusion, it is necessary to state that all the prejudices should be apart from work. Counselors are people who should be willing to help those in need no matter what their personal beliefs are. All the counselors should leave sexism, racism apart from work. It is a job for people who are truly willing to make our world a better place to live in.
