Chapter 5
Identification of problem or issue
What problem(s) is the author identifying? Who does the problem relate to?
The problem that Dr. Kenagy has identified in his book is that of the lack of innovation in leading and established institutions. According to the author, such institutions are destined to fail in the long-run owing to the rapid rate of development in respective industries. As such, the problem relates to institutions that are already established and comfortable in following their business models without the need to innovate.
For whom is this topic important and why?
The topic is important for the healthcare industry as it is one of the industries that rarely understand the need for disruptive and transformational innovation in order to serve patients in a better way.
Making connections
How is what I am reading different from what I already know? Why might this difference exist?
The reading presents a different perspective and outlook on the importance of innovation. The difference exists as a result of the lack of innovative systems and processes in established institutions.
What new ideas are here for me to consider? Why am I willing or not willing to consider them?
The ideas presented concern the importance of adaptation in the changing landscape of all industries. I am willing to consider this aspect as a result of history that details the demise of institutions that failed to adapt to changes in their industries.
Interpretation of evidence
What inferences can I make from the evidence given in the assigned chapter(s)?
The inference I can draw from the reading is that for disruptive change to occur, institutions must be willing and ready to recognize the need for change.
What relevant evidence or examples does the author give to support his or her justification?
In this case, the author presents Toyota Company as an example of a firm that continuously disrupts it to effect change thereby ensuring its success.
Challenging assumptions
What kind of assumptions is the author making? Do you share these assumptions?
What information builds my confidence in the author’s expertise?
The fact that the author applies principles for Christensen and the latter recognizes the author’s work builds my confidence in his expertise.
If the opportunity arose, what questions would I pose to the author?
If the opportunity arose, I would question the author of his motivation in ensuring disruptive change in the healthcare industry.
Making application
What advice could I add to this reading selection? On what basis do I give this advice?
The advice I would add to this section is that institutions should not fear change as it is the only thing constant. This is based by the fact that change ultimately happens whether we like it or not.
Looking toward where I want to be in two years, what suggestions from the reading make the most sense to me?
The suggestion that makes sense to me is the importance of embracing change.
What would you point out as important about this topic to others who either question or disagree with my point of view?
For those who disagree with this point of view, I would point out the consequences of companies that have failed to embrace change.
Chapter 6
Identification of problem or issue
What problem(s) is the author identifying? Who does the problem relate to?
The problem which the author identifies is the lack of standardization of work. This problem relates to the lack of recognition of the change that prompts improvement in processes and output.
For whom is this topic important and why?
This topic is important to the healthcare industry as a result of the strict adherence to rules of conduct and lack of definition of processes that leads to a breakdown in communication and consequently, process outcomes.
Making connections
How is what I am reading different from what I already know? Why might this difference exist?
This reading is different on the basis of the application of the Knowledge Management System. The difference exists as a result of the consideration of general rules that apply to an organization’s industry but are unspecific to local conditions of individual institutions.
What new ideas are here for me to consider? Why am I willing or not willing to consider them?
The new ideas proposed are the need for consideration of local conditions to guide process management. I agree with this view as conditions are destined to vary with time in relation to the changing environment.
Interpretation of evidence
What inferences can I make from the evidence given in the assigned chapter(s)?
The evidence inferred from this reading is the need to integrate knowledge management into the system.
What relevant evidence or examples does the author give to support his or her justification?
The example fronted by the author is that of a typical surgical room situation that involves the interaction people, processes, and materials.
Challenging assumptions
What kind of assumptions is the author making? Do you share these assumptions?
What information builds my confidence in the author’s expertise?
If the opportunity arose, what questions would I pose to the author?
The question I would pose to the author is whether the application of the TPS system varies across different health institutions.
Making application
What advice could I add to this reading selection? On what basis do I give this advice?
Looking toward where I want to be in two years, what suggestions from the reading make the most sense to me?
The suggestion I would adapt in this instance is the need for deciphering the entire system to ascertain the main people, activities, and processes involved for relevancy purposes. What would you point out as important about this topic to others who either question or disagree with my point of view?
For those who disagree with my point of view, I would provide different practical examples from healthcare settings to enumerate my perspective.
