b) A memoir from the point of view of a person who must care for a person who has autism.
Every little girl from her childhood dreams about an unclouded happiness and a fascinating prince that will come one day and take her to the Fairyland. Though that girl is growing up and each new year is transforming into an experienced mature woman, there is still hope in in the depth of her heart that a better future and a happy family life is going to knock in her ajar door. In some cases, however, God has slightly different plans for us. It is hard to deny that life is full of different moments which could be really sad and disappointed. Very often people are faced with injustice and various events that seem to be very bitter and completely unbearable. Many individuals believe that these challenges are too severe for them and use to cry the blues, in order to obtain sympathy for their misery and grief. Life does not always tend to be a piece of cake, but even in the most trying ordeals it is possible to see the beauty of life. As for me, I used to perceive any challenges in such a way that they till my character and make me a stronger and better person.
My life story does not resemble that fascinating fairytale I was dreaming about in my childhood. No matter how difficult it may sometimes be to recover my temper and continue to wend way through life with a smile, I am thankful for God for everything I have. Best of all, I am grateful for my loving family that is my most precious treasure in life. At first sight, we do not differ from any other typical family, but there is one problem that had one day drastically changed our lifestyle forever. The reason of my whole existence, my beloved son, was diagnosed with autism, the neurodevelopmental disorder for which unfortunately no specific drug is even made.
Truly, at first, I had really difficult time realizing that my child had a life-long disability. The first questions that I asked a doctor when Adam was diagnosed with that developmental problem was “Whose fault is it?” or “Why exactly my dear son deserved such cruel fate?” Recollecting those first days after the diagnosis, tears are welling in my eyes. Then I thought I could not go thought that hell and repined at unhappy lot. It was an extremely stressful period in our life, as all members of our family were somehow impacted. My husband and I were suffering from the disruption in our body condition, emotional health and even relationship. What is more, we even felt that we were walking a solitary path.
Speaking about our elder daughter, Jessica, she was really confused and did not know how to behave with Adam. She was doing her best to take care of her younger brother, but we were aware how emotionally difficult it proved to be. Jessica, as well as our whole family desired to turn back those untroubled moments and feel that cherished balance where there was not any autism, however, all we had was only joint memories of that happy time.
The only person, who was not going to give up and consoled us every moment, was my mother. She loved her little grandson, no matter what and was determined to return usual balance and faith in our disappointed family. This woman did everything possible, so that autism did not transform into the center of the family. Firstly, she learned all available information about that mental condition. Secondly, the mother read about challenges of other people who were also suffering from autism.
Different inspirational stories of success that my mother retold us, served as an efficient source of imitation that proved we were not alone in our grief and helped to move on. Thanks to these personal accounts from individuals experiencing autism, our family managed to revive necessary balance and family hearth. I finally overcame my depression and devoted myself to the taking care of my son, Adam.
You perhaps want to know what it is like to be an autistic individual. Only autist himself knows for sure. I though, could tell you it from the point of view of the person who cared for such individual. One should understand that the autistic experience similarly to the non-autistic experience is extremely diverse. Some individuals may be happy and have close friends, while others are usually sad and do not like any company. As for my son Adam, he is a true extrovert. Thanks to my close observations, I noticed that his emotions did not differ especially from mine. Adam prefers to be with people he enjoys being around. He feels in his own way which people like him and accept for who he is.
Moreover, like any other people Adam needs people’s support and respect. He desires others understand his concerns and take them seriously, but do not sympathize with him all the time. How happy the boy is when friends get his jokes or invite him to their parties or to the cinema. Sometimes it seems to me that Adam lives in two words. The first one is the outside world, the second, his special world.
The moment when he is in the latter world, the boy does not hear what others are saying and simply gets lost for some time. One thing that impressed me the most in my son’s behavior was the healthy quality of his emotional life. Adam enjoys food that tasts delicious, good music and having fun with his sister. In spite of his mental condition, his likes are the same as of non-autists. Though Adam’s dislikes prove to be very intense and difficult to understand, I used to them and began to love my son twice as stronger.
Time passes rapidly and Adam is gradually turning into an adult male. Though his autism did not disappear anywhere, we learned to live with it and would never leave Adam alone in his complicated life path, but instead would transcend all obstacles together.
