Becoming a lawyer is not something that anyone should take lightly. It is a challenge, yes, but more than that, it is a great responsibility: a responsibility to those clients that one will eventually serve and a responsibility to the community as a whole. Learning the law is only the first step in becoming a lawyer, and it is perhaps not even the most important part of mastering this profession. Obtaining a JD is an educational experience, but practicing law is something beyond education. It is a calling; it is an ethical responsibility that I feel is very deeply ingrained within my being.
On the most basic level, a lawyer’s responsibility is to uphold the law. Unfortunately, upholding the law is not always the easiest thing to do, and it is sometimes not the most ethical thing to do either. A good lawyer must be able to consider the needs of the client, and do everything he or she can within the bounds of the law in order to serve that client. Sometimes, lawyers will serve a client who has done something wrong or even disturbing. However, the nature of the crime does not ever remove the responsibilities of the lawyer to serve the best interests of the client.
A lawyer does not have to like his or her client, and he does not have to go outside the law to serve the client. However, it can be tempting for a lawyer with a client who has done something horrible to try to ensure that the client goes to jail. This is a serious breach of ethics, and upholding this ethical responsibility is one of the most important and challenging things that a lawyer must do.
Lawyers also have a responsibility to the legal system. They must act ethically and within their general scope of practice, and should not behave in such a way that would compromise the overall integrity of the criminal justice system or the civil court system. Lawyers are tasked with providing all clients with a fair trial, so even when it is tempting, a lawyer has the responsibility to ensure that the trial is fair and not biased in any illegal way towards the interests of their client. This protects the justice system, the lawyer and the client from unfair considerations over the course of the trial.
Personally, I believe that a lawyer also has the responsibility to give back to the community. It is not enough to become a high-powered legal figure and make excessive amounts of money — a good lawyer should also give back to people who do not have the money for legal defense. This means that, as a lawyer, I believe I have the responsibility to take on a number of cases pro bono per year for indigent defendants; this is a relatively easy way to begin to build a better criminal justice or civil court system, and a better community as a whole.
As lawyers, we have a responsibility to fairness, justice, and ethics. Although I am not a lawyer yet, I know that upholding these values is far not easy. As such, I know that to be a good lawyer and a good person I need to continuously seek to uphold these values without any kind of outside influence or outside provocation. No one will tell me that I have to do these things: they are things I feel driven to do because they are right and they are what a lawyer should do to be an ethical, just, and fair legal professional.
