Why Choose Biology
Many people study medicine when it comes to science in educational institutes. I chose to study biology. According to one source biology is "The science of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution.” (The Free Dictionary). Biology allows us to test our thoughts on life and living subjects, find new or linked species and conduct reverse–engineering. Before becoming a doctor or nurse it is one of the subjects many will take. Before accepting a degree in engineering or the field of a scientist it is also one of the areas most studied and applied to.
I have always wanted to use the top notch equipment you see on television and in movies. It’s safe to say some of those equipment are real and to be able to put them to the test will be an honor. Biology gives me a range of specialties to choose from which includes but is not limited to microbial genetics. Proteins for example have a chemical reaction on our cell’s membranes, not just any reaction but a biochemical reaction. Scientist have discovered this with the help of biology. Before one can accomplish all of this there is some things to think about and specific details to pay attention to.
Simply due to what biology entails and involves, one must have a stomach for these type of things. If a person loves science, plant life or dealing with living organisms then they are in the correct field of study. However, if not and a person just wants to get involved in using the unique equipment, that is not justifiable enough. Some students will go all the way and others realizing what they are getting themselves into will change their minds to focus on another field of study. My goal is to complete it with degree in the subject if at all possible. The job and duty itself allows me to expand my horizon and delve into more research studies.
The job field and career is wide open to those who take on this subject or if they choose to get a degree in it. Countless offers are made and there is a demand for the specialty. Based on one source if a person has a degree in that field they can become “Agronomist, animal behaviour scientist, animal welfare officer, biochemist, biotechnologist, cheese production supervisor, conservation biologist, environmental analyst, environmental ecologist, environmental manager, environmental officer” (Te Kete Ipurangi). The list of opportunities go on and on. If one simply does not like the work or field they are in using the same degree switch to another job title with a different description.
When I think of biology, I have to consider genetic studies and genetic disorders as well as physiology. I think of what our bodies are made of and not just flesh, but blood, blood cells and much more. The way in which our body operates and works and how it can be affected by certain elements which includes but is not limited to the types of food we eat to the environment we live in. For example the thought has crossed my mind that some people are allergic to milk and its products including dairy. What makes them react to it or have a reaction to it is simply more than on the molecular level. There are also people who cannot eat fish or seafood due to the level of mercury in them or another reason.
Biology simply opens up our eyes and allows us to question what if and what can be done if part of life. It helps us to solve the unanswered questions that linger in our minds, but it helps more than just the average person. Nutritionist for example can use biology to help a patient who may have a simple problem with the food they eat, doctors and scientist use biology to help their patients as well as those who volunteer for studies. Healthcare is a key stone due to biology and it’s the ancestor of pharmacology and immunology. Immunizations are given to help many and their bodies fight against infections.
In order to give the immunization, biological studies were conducted into finding the cures first. Using pharmacology to find the medicines needed to correct or assist a person the study was done in biology. It has helped to improve other field of study. When we hear the mention of DNA and the correction or removal of genetic traits that is all due to the study of biology. It is our absolute foundation that has broken tremendous grounds and led us this far into science. If it were not for biology where would the human race be? Probably still in our infancy trying to figure out how to resolve a simply cure.
Biology has a lot to offer. As mentioned by one source scientist in this field “try to understand how animals and organisms work (including us humans), how we evolved and the things that can make us sick or improve our health.” (SuccessatSchool.org ). There are so many people in the world today who die from causes unknown or die from what we do know. The problem that arise is how to treat it by cures or how to stop the issue in its tracks before it gets worse. One topic always in the news is the Zika Virus and I believe there is a cure that can be attained, through the help of biology and its many aspects of studies. Whether or not this happens only the future and time will reveal.
