ASSIGNMENT SEVEN PAPER ONE
As we all know newspapers tend to report news items according to priority and also according to their readers’ preference. The two dailies that would be compared in this assignment are The Hindu and The New Indian Express. The three news items to be compared are: 1. Loss of lives due to IS attacks In Yemen1 2. S-300 missiles deployed at Iranian nuclear site2 and 3. Evacuation at LA airport3.
While news item 1 seems to be a major news in the world news segment of The Hindu, which has reported it in about quarter page (14), The New Indian Express has presented it very briefly (11). This may be perhaps such bombings of the ISIS have been holding their readers’ attention for quite some time now or they have felt the need to give importance to other news as well. Though both the dailies have mentioned the number of lives lost in their titles to capture readers’ attention, it is only The New Indian Express that mentions the place of attack as ‘Yemeni army centre’.
The next item finds substantial importance in The New Indian Express, while the same is presented in a snippet in The Hindu. Though both the dailies have made a good report of the news item, The New Indian Express quotes Ayatollah Khameneni’s views, gives information about the site followed by critic’s views about Iran’s interest in manufacturing nuclear weapons, a claim refuted by Iran.

With regard to the third news item, though both the dailies have only given a snippet, The Hindu seems to have provided answers to the ‘wh’-questions, while The New Indian Express has provided much less information. In spite of both dailies giving captivating titles, The title of The New Indian Express is bound to kindle the curiosity of the reader as it mentions “Zorro’ detained” which is compelling.
