Racial inequality is still evident in the country today, but as one goes over the material, it becomes apparent that it is institutionalized. Since the end of slavery, those in power have worked hard to continue the inequality between races. The division is still present for most minorities, with the occasional exception. For example, not as many minorities graduate high school or college as do white students. Similarly, not as many minorities come from two parent households as do white children. This is in stark contrast, however, to the stereotype that black fathers are often absent from their children’s lives. It has been found that black fathers are sometimes present more often than white fathers.
Racial inequality and stereotyping is not only seen in school and homes. It is also experienced, perhaps more prevalently than anywhere else, in the workforce. The material states that in an effort to overcome racial inequality in the workforce, affirmative action was instigated. Affirmative action was a measure that ensured no employer could turn down a potential employee based on their race or gender; up until that point many minorities were being turned away from jobs not based on their qualifications, but based on their race. The action demanded every person, no matter their race or gender, be given a fair chance to work in a position as long as they meet specific criteria to accomplish a task. Affirmative action is often also applied to students of different races who apply to schools.
Unfortunately, still when minorities overcome the racial inequality, whether it be socioeconomic, educational, or occupational, that they experience their entire lives, they will likely continue to experience this inequality even after being hired or attending university. Black students have a higher dropout rate than white students. Women are paid less than men, which is a travesty unto itself, but black women are paid less than white women by up to twenty-five cents depending on where they are hired.
The racial inequality experienced by women in the minority can also be very frightening concerning violence. The material states they are taken less serious concerning reports of violence and rape when they call the authorities. They are also twice as likely to be assaulted than other women. Black men are incarcerated at a rate of two to one in comparison to white men, and often for two to three times as long for the same crime committed by white men. There is a stereotype following African Americans of both gender. In the eyes of the law, both appear to be liars. Women are not worthy of protection, and apparently bring the assault on themselves, while men must be causing trouble and even if they have committed the same crime as a white man, are often considered dangerous.
The shocking incident involving Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, finally capturing the attention of America showed how prevalent this racial inequality can be. A nineteen-year-old African American child committed the petty crime of theft. With his back turned, he was fired upon several times in the street by a white police officer. He died as a result. Not only is it likely that if Brown had been white the incident would not have happened this way, but the country showed how accepting it is of this inequality when it opened a public funding site for the officer who committed this murder while he was on suspended paid leave, the police board let him go free, and he was able to get married amidst the allegations. Racial inequality, as all the material shows, is still thick in America.
