Essay 1: Music Sync Assignment
The use of music in the media industry has become an imperative aspect of communication and entertainment. Music is basically used in various activities in the mainstream media either for purposes of entertainment, advertisement or during commercial breaks. Watching various programs in different television networks such as ABC, NBC or FOX and CBS the use of music is almost similar. For instance, music is used in marketing of various products, basically playing at the background while running a particular advertisement; on the other hand, the other use of music in these television networks seems to be based on facilitating various promotions. However, it is important to acknowledge that the use of music in all these television channels is used as a tool to capture the attention of different stakeholders.
Having watched various live matches aired in different television networks, one may conclude that the use of music in-between these events are paramount. It appears that the organizers of these events are using music in-between breaks of a particular sport to cheer the crowds; that is, to ensure that the crow remains in the most appropriate moods as they wait for the matches to continue. In summary, the use of music during sports events that are aired live during sports are intended to entertain the audience and ensure they support their teams.
Essay 2: Pros and Cons of 360 Deals
Recording Company and Artists have been presented with certain 360 deals given that there has been a trend of declining sales in the number of records. The 360 deals have been received with different opinions, with many stakeholders holding the perspective that they are essential because they create a platform for the recording companies to share benefits generated by artists on an equal basis (The American Bar Association). It is important to ensure that 360 deals are basically agreements or contract entered by the artists and their record producers so that they recording company is able to benefit from the various income streams. Through the 360 deals, companies responsible for the recording of music for their artists are not only allowed to benefit from non-recording facets of the artists including endorsements, merchandise sales and tours. Besides, 360 deals create a platform for the recording companies to facilitate the development of their artists and assuming central roles in major decisions made by their artists.
Reasons Artists Sign 360 Deals and Related Decisions
Stakeholders in the Music Industry have noted with great concern that the sale of music records in the current sector have experienced critical decline. The reduction of music sales in the conventional society has been associated with increasing cases of piracy and the fact that many music enthusiasts do not prefer purchasing an entire album. Besides, many consumers have been attracted to the digitally available songs that can be accessed through the current communication systems including the internet. In this regard, recording companies and their artists are seeking strategies that would ensure that their sales are at the required levels. This is the reason stakeholders such as Madonna and Pussy Cat Dolls have signed 360 Deals worth more than $100 million ("Update: Madonna Confirms Deal With Live Nation"). In fact, certain record label companies have emphasized on the need to engage artists in 360 Deals given the fact that a significant portion of the expenditure required to produce music is incurred by the recording companies. Also, many individuals in the recording industry believe that 360 Deals are appropriate for both the Artist and their record label companies because it creates a platform for averting risks associated with the production of music in market characterized by high levels of piracy. In this regard, it is essential that both stakeholders are provided with an equal platform to share income generated from the recording and non-record streams of a particular album.
Artists who have benefited and those who have not benefited from 360 Deals
Jay-Z is one of the artists that have achieved tremendous benefits from 360 Deals. However, apart from Jay-Z certain artists like Madonna have also recorded significant benefits by signing 360 Deals with a recording company known as the Live Nation; this is a company that not only focuses on recording, but also promoting the work of a particular artist. The 360 Deal signed between Madonna and Live Nation was worth $120 million and has been regarded as one of the most beneficial. On the other hand, Pussy Cat Dolls have also signed similar deal with Paramore, a deal which exists since 2007. Even though Pussy Cat Dolls achieved greater success through this deal, it has been highly criticized by many stakeholders who note that it is one of the factors that that facilitated the reduction of Pussy Cat Dolls’ value. Certain stakeholders in the music industry believe that 360 Deals are not appropriate arrangements for artists given that certain recording companies tend to control artists’ creativity, hence, interfering with their brands.
