Throughout the course of my academic career I have adopted and synthesized various elements of effective academic article construction techniques, yet none have been so fundamentally formative in my ability to engage with the viewpoints expressed by other writers as the principles and techniques outlined in chapter four “The Three Ways to Respond”. In this chapter, I gained a greater degree of understanding regarding effectively engaging in academic dialogue through incorporating the three primary response methods of agreeing, disagreeing or some combination of both to better discern the viewpoints of an author from the perspective of an active reader, as well as to better facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in arenas of intellectual dialogue. While there are numerous other rhetorical methods which can be employed in the context of academic or otherwise intellectual dialogue to actively participate in the exchange of information and ideas, the three primary methods of response form a fundamental cornerstone of rhetorical discourse, of which a working knowledge is crucial for effective engagement with the audience.
In what could be considered as the initial lesson in the wealth of knowledge I have gained from this chapter, I have gained new insight into the importance of a clear and concise introduction, which includes a statement of my ideological perspective or viewpoint regarding the topic in question to help the reader properly orient my viewpoint according to his or her “mental map”. It is important to establish the viewpoints or ideological perspectives of the author early in the text in a “no-nonsense” style introduction, as readers are likely to become “frustrated” when “writers take too long to declare their position relative to the views they’ve summarized or quoted”. It is also important to consider that by clearly establishing the viewpoints of the author prior to delving into specific details like a comprehensive analysis or argumentative deconstruction of a subject, the reader is able to “appreciate the complications you go on to offer as your response unfolds”. I have incorporated this “no-nonsense” introductory technique within not only academic publications, but also in dialogue exchanged on social media platforms between individuals of differing ideological positions to more effectively frame my viewpoints.
I also gained valuable knowledge regarding the possible multi-dimensional approaches to forming a response contained within the three primary methods of agreeing, disagreeing and communicating a hybridized perspective. These multi-dimensional responses are outlined and described in the “Templates for Agreeing” and “Templates for Disagreeing”, which provide examples of varying logical approaches to articulating one’s response. For example, “Templates for Disagreeing with Reasons” section provides examples of effective logical rebuttals to positions posed by the author and “Templates for Agreeing” includes examples of logical responses which can expand the scope of dialogue by incorporating unaddressed elements of a particular topic. While I was previously aware of rhetorical methods for framing a response, the examples provided in the “Templates” have provided me with a more dynamic array of logical methods to incorporate in subsequent writing endeavors.
I believe the authors chose to focus on describing the three primary methods of response in academic writing because these fundamental rhetorical techniques allow individuals to formulate rhetorically effective arguments and effectively engage with one another in the open exchange of dialogue. In using these fundamental rhetorical methods, individuals can build logical crossroads in the intellectual community and engage with both the author and the audience in the exchange of information and ideas and through extension the evolution and transformation of perspectives. While there are numerous rhetorical techniques which can be employed to respond to the views and opinions of others and thus engage in the arena of social dialogue, the “Three Ways to Respond” provide a fundamental cornerstone of discourse from which individuals can develop effective rhetorical strategies to participate in the open exchange of information and ideas.
