Treating Adolescent Girls Who Self-Harm
Slide 3
This presentation on a proposed research on treating adolescent girls who self-harm presents the research hypothesis, working variables, measurements, sampling methodology, data collection methods, research design, and the ethical considerations of the study.
Slide 4
The Research Hypothesis (H1) asserts that: Adolescent girls receiving a group therapy intervention will show a more significant decrease in self-harming tendencies when compared to adolescent females receiving individual therapy intervention.
Accordingly, the independent variable focuses on the type of treatment intervention while the dependent variable considers the self-harming behaviors among teenage girls.
Slide 5
Identified variables will appear as nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio levels of measurement. Slide 6
I will use the convenience sampling technique because there is no way of guaranteeing particular adolescents who self-harm will participate in the study. Hence, the research will not have a sampling frame, and the initial respondents will have a higher chance of recruitment than those who come late (first-come-first-serve basis).
They must meet the inclusion criteria: female with a history of self-harm aged between 10 and 19 years, self-harm patients currently undergoing an intervention program such as group therapy, and respondents aged below 16 years need a valid consent from parents.
Slide 7 and 8
The data collection methods include the use of Questionnaires and the Group discussions and In-person interviews. A combination of the two strategies will give me a chance to gather different types of information from the participants.
Questionnaires ask specific questions while the discussions will remain spontaneous to cover any areas that the respondents wish to address.
Slide 9 and 10
In this study, to gain statistical data, this study will use the quantitative research design. The quantitative study refers to the numerical data and statistical analyses that provide the measurable information in a study (Breakwell, Smith, and Wright, 2012, p.31).
Exploratory and descriptive research refers to the process of looking for patterns in [collected] data” (Breakwell, Smith, and Wright, 2012, p.550). For this study, I will utilize observable facts to supplement the data collected via the quantitative methods.
Slide 11
The internal validity concerns include the possible introduction of new medication and participants engaging in other forms of therapy that could undermine group therapy as a successful intervention in helping self-harm girls.
Slide 12
The ethical considerations in this study will seek to gain the permission of involved persons and institutes, assure the participants of their privacy and the confidentiality of all given information, and the respondents will be at liberty to leave the study.
